Chapter 10 - A Real Home

One year later.
The afternoon sun blazed over a charming beachfront cottage on the quiet coast of Maine. The air smelled of salt, fresh pine, and wild roses.
On the porch, a small boy with dark hair and bright grey eyes was taking clumsy, determined steps across the wooden boards, laughing hysterically as a golden retriever puppy gently nudged his shoes.
"Careful, Leo!" Claire called out, walking out onto the deck carrying a tray of iced tea.
She looked radiant. The shadow of fear and loneliness that had defined her past was completely gone, replaced by a deep, glowing warmth.
A pair of strong arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind. Damian pulled her close, resting his chin on her shoulder. He looked healthy, his face relaxed, wearing a simple linen shirt and jeans. The lethal, cold mob boss was completely dead; in his place stood a devoted husband and father.
"He's getting faster," Damian murmured softly, pressing a sweet kiss against Claire’s neck. "He’s going to be running across the beach by next month."
"Then you’ll have to run after him," Claire teased, turning in his arms to wrap her hands around his neck.
Damian looked down into her eyes, his expression filled with profound reverence. Every day for the past year, he had worked tirelessly to earn back her trust—not with grand gestures or expensive gifts, but with presence, honesty, and quiet morning conversations over coffee. He was there for every tear, every fever, every smile, and every milestone.
"Thank you," Damian whispered softly.
"For what?"
"For leaving me," he said honestly. "If you hadn't vanished that night, I would have lost my soul to that dark life. You saved me, Claire. You saved our family."
Claire smiled, resting her head against his chest, listening to the calm, steady beat of his heart.

"I didn't leave to save you, Damian," she said softly, looking out at the endless blue horizon where their son was playing safely in the grass. "I left to save us. And I’m so glad you finally found your way home."
Damian leaned down and kissed her deeply, a sweet, quiet promise sealed beneath the bright Maine sun, with no secrets, no empires, and no shadows left between them.
