Chapter 9 - Dismantling the Monster

The next forty-eight hours were a blur of fluorescent lights, cold hospital waiting rooms, and tense medical updates at a high-security private facility in Boston.

Damian survived the surgery, though he remained in a medically induced coma for three days. Claire never left his bedside. She sat in the vinyl chair, holding his uninjured hand, while Leo slept soundly in a portable bassinet beside them.

During those three days, Claire took control.

She summoned Malcolm Reed and Viktor into the hospital room.

"It’s time to end this," Claire declared, her voice cold and commanding. "All of it."

Using Damian’s master authority codes—which he had left in a sealed envelope with Malcolm before leaving for Vermont—Claire directed the complete dismantling of the Moreland syndicate's illegal operations. She turned over crucial evidence regarding Julian Vance and Sabrina Cole to federal authorities through anonymous, untraceable channels.

Within forty-eight hours, Julian Vance was arrested at a Miami airport, facing federal racketeering and attempted murder charges. Sabrina Cole was picked up at her penthouse, her financial career ruined, facing decades in prison for corporate espionage and conspiracy.

When Damian finally opened his eyes on the fourth morning, the bright sun was streaming through the hospital window.

He turned his head slowly. Claire was sitting beside him, peeling an apple. Leo was cooing softly in his crib nearby.

"Where... where are we?" Damian rasped, his throat raw.

"Boston," Claire said quietly, setting the apple down. "And you are officially a retired businessman."

Damian looked at her, confused. "What do you mean?"

"The syndicate is gone, Damian," Claire said softly, walking over to brush a strand of hair from his forehead. "I used your authority. The illegal assets were liquidated and donated to medical research charities. The legitimate real-estate companies were placed into an independent trust for Leo. Julian Vance and Sabrina are in federal custody. You have no more empire. You have no more enemies. You are just a man."

Damian stared at her in shock, then let out a long, shuddering breath. A weight that he had carried since he was a teenager seemed to instantly lift from his shoulders. He didn't care about the billions lost. He felt entirely, wonderfully free.
