Chapter 7 - Under Siege
Julian Vance’s men had tracked Damian’s signal. Recognizing an opportunity to eliminate the head of the Moreland family in an isolated location, six heavily armed mercenaries were advancing on the cabin.
Smoke filled the room. Leo began to cry hysterically.
"Jenna! Get into the storm cellar under the kitchen!" Damian commanded, reaching into his coat and pulling out a silenced pistol—the only weapon he had brought.
Claire didn't hesitate. Trusting his combat instincts out of sheer survival, she grabbed Jenna and sprinted toward the kitchen, staying low to avoid the flying bullets splintering the walls.
Damian stood up in the hazy light, his face transforming back into the terrifying strategist he had tried to leave behind. He fired three precise shots through the broken front window, dropping two advancing gunmen in the snow.
"Claire! Get down!" he yelled, kicking over the heavy dining table to form a barricade.
A third shooter kicked open the back door near the kitchen, raising an automatic rifle directly toward Claire, who was sheltering Leo with her body.
Without thinking, Damian lunged across the kitchen island, taking two round impacts to his shoulder and side. He collided with the gunman, driving his knife into the attacker's chest before collapsing to the ground, gasping for air.
"Damian!" Claire shrieked, running over to him as the remaining attackers outside retreated temporarily, startled by the heavy resistance.

Blood was pouring onto the wooden floorboards, soaking into Damian’s coat.
"Take... take the child..." Damian wheezed, his face pale as chalk, pressing his bleeding hand against his side. "The storm cellar has an outlet to the woods... go, Claire... go!"
