Chapter 3 - Infiltration and Injunctions

By mid-afternoon, the glass towers of Sterling Global Holdings in downtown Los Angeles felt less like an empire and more like a panopticon. Alexander sat at the head of a massive mahogany boardroom table, listening to a presentation about a multi-billion-dollar merger, but his mind was miles away, anchored in a dilapidated house in South Central.
"Mr. Sterling? Your signature is required on the final line to authorize the restructuring," his chief legal counsel, a sharp, calculating man named Kenneth Vance—who had served his father before him—said, sliding a leather-bound document across the table.
Alexander looked down at the signature line. Arthur Sterling had signed thousands of these papers. Kenneth had witnessed them all.
"Kenneth," Alexander said, ignoring the pen. "Dismiss the board. I need a private word with you."
The executives exchanged nervous glances but cleared the room within thirty seconds. Once the heavy double doors clicked shut, Alexander turned his intense, icy gaze onto the veteran lawyer.
"Tell me about the Marcus Vance case from fifteen years ago," Alexander stated without preamble.
Kenneth’s hand froze mid-air as he reached for his reading glasses. The color drain from his face was subtle, but to a trained observer like Alexander, it was as loud as a gunshot.
"Marcus Vance?" Kenneth asked, forcing a dry chuckle. "Alexander, that’s ancient history. A minor dispute during the acquisition phase of the South Central logistics hub. The man was a stubborn local mechanic who refused a very generous buyout. Why on earth are you bringing him up now?"
"Because a ghost from that project is currently cleaning my house," Alexander replied, his voice dangerously low. "And she possesses a metal box containing documents that claim my father forged eminent domain records and burned down Vance's workshop to force him out."
Kenneth slammed his hand onto the table, standing up instantly. "That is corporate slander! Your father was a saint who built this company from nothing! Marcus Vance was an unstable man who died in an accidental electrical fire caused by his own faulty equipment in his shop!"
"Is that the truth, Kenneth? Or is that the narrative you constructed to protect the stock price?" Alexander demanded, standing up to match the lawyer’s height, his presence imposing. "Because if there is a paper trail proving fraud, the entire foundation of Sterling Global is built on a crime. The merger we are signing today would be completely invalid, and I could face federal racketeering charges."
Kenneth leaned in, his voice dropping to an urgent, venomous whisper. "Listen to me, Alexander. You are Arthur’s son. Your job is to rule this kingdom, not dig up the graves of the peasants who stood in the way of progress. Whoever this girl is, she is a threat. Give me her name, and I will have security remove her from the property and ensure she never speaks a word to the press or the authorities."
"No," Alexander barked. "You will touch no one. I am handling this. If I find out you lied to me, Kenneth—if I find out my father had blood on his hands and you held the towel—I will personally hand you over to the district attorney."
Kenneth stared at Alexander, his expression hardening into something cold and unrecognizable. "You have your father’s eyes, Alexander. But you lack his stomach for what it takes to stay at the top. Be careful what you dig up. You might just bury yourself."
Alexander turned and walked out of the boardroom, his heart heavy with a terrible realization: Kenneth knew everything. The conspiracy was real.
He returned to his mansion earlier than usual, bypassing the main entrance to enter through the security surveillance hub in the basement. He ordered the security guards out, locking himself inside the room filled with dozens of monitors displaying every corner of the estate.
He brought up the camera feed for the private study.
Maya was inside.
She wasn't cleaning. She had a small, high-speed flash drive inserted into his primary terminal, her fingers flying across the keyboard with professional speed. She was downloading the encrypted ledger files.
Alexander watched her through the screen, his emotions torn between a deep sense of corporate betrayal and an overwhelming, aching empathy for the injustice she had suffered. She was risking her life to clear her father’s name.

Suddenly, on the monitor, he saw the doorknob of the study begin to turn. Someone was coming in. It was Kenneth’s personal security detail, who had arrived at the house under the guise of delivering legal briefs.
Maya looked up, panic freezing her features as she realized she was caught in a trap.
