Chapter 8 - The Siege of Sterling Plaza

The downtown core of Los Angeles was a fortress of glass, steel, and high security as the morning of the merger arrived. Sterling Plaza was surrounded by media vans, satellite dishes, and hundreds of high-profile investors arriving in luxury limousines for the global broadcast of the century.
Inside the grand auditorium, Kenneth Vance stood backstage, adjusted his pristine silk tie, and checked his gold watch. 10:00 AM was approaching rapidly.
"Is the emergency voting proxy finalized?" Kenneth asked his primary lieutenant, an imposing mercenary commander.
"Yes, sir," the commander replied. "The board has accepted your declaration that Alexander Sterling is incapacitated. The international consortium is ready to execute the transfer the moment you finish your opening remarks on stage."
"Excellent," Kenneth purred, a predatory grin spreading across his face. "Alexander was always too soft. He lacked his father's vision. Today, the Sterling empire becomes mine."
Meanwhile, in the bustling loading dock beneath the plaza, a catering truck pulled up to the security gate. The driver delivered a stack of industrial food crates. No one noticed the two individuals dressed in matching black service uniforms, their faces partially obscured by low-brimmed caps, pushing a massive laundry bin through the service elevators.
It was Alexander and Maya.
They split up according to plan. Alexander headed toward the main stage wings, while Maya utilized her master maintenance keys to drop deep into the subterranean utility vaults, carrying her laptop and the manual override bridge cables.
At exactly 9:55 AM, Kenneth Vance stepped onto the massive stage, greeted by the blinding flashes of hundreds of cameras and a thunderous round of applause from the global financial elite. The giant, high-definition digital screen behind him displayed the logo of the new global conglomerate.
"Ladies and gentlemen, members of the board, and citizens of the global market," Kenneth began, his voice projecting through the massive speaker array with absolute authority. "Today, we don't just sign a contract. We honor the legacy of our founder, the late, great Arthur Sterling, by taking his vision into a new era of global dominance."
Behind the scenes, inside the broadcast control booth, Julian Vance quietly locked the heavy reinforced door from the inside, cutting off the main production crew. His fingers flew across the control panel, slaving the primary satellite feed to an external encrypted IP address.
"Go ahead, Maya," Julian whispered into his earpiece. "You're live in five, four, three..."
Suddenly, the massive digital screen behind Kenneth flickered violently. The corporate logo vanished, replaced by a stark, high-definition image of an old, handwritten contract from 2011, stamped with a bright red watermark: FORENSIC FORGERY DETECTED.
The auditorium erupted into a wave of confused murmurs. Kenneth froze, his jaw dropping as he turned around to look at the screen.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Kenneth roared, looking toward the tech booth. "Cut the feed! Cut the power now!"
But the power wouldn't cut. Deep in the basement, Maya had slammed the manual override levers into place, bypassing the building's main breakers, locking the digital display matrix into an un-interruptible circuit.
Then, a voice cut through the confusion—a deep, resonant voice that everyone in the room recognized instantly.

"The meaning, Kenneth, is that the show is over."
Alexander Sterling stepped out from the stage wings into the brilliant spotlights, his eyes fixed on the man who had murdered Marcus Vance.
