Chapter 4 - The Confrontation in the Dark

Alexander didn't hesitate. He lunged across the security room, slammed his hand onto the master override switch, and cut the power to the entire mansion.
Instantly, the monitors went black, and the entire estate was plunged into total darkness.
Upstairs, the sudden loss of power triggered a localized security lock, freezing the electronic doors in place for sixty seconds before the backup generators could kick in. Alexander utilized his intimate knowledge of the mansion's architectural layout, running up the service stairs in the dark, his heart pounding in his ears.
He burst into the private study just as the mechanical locks clicked open. In the faint moonlight filtering through the high windows, he saw Maya frantically trying to pull her flash drive from the terminal.
Before she could escape, Alexander stepped into the room, closing the heavy oak door behind him. The backup generators hummed to life, illuminating the room in a dim, amber emergency glow.
Maya spun around, her back slammed against the desk, the flash drive clutched tightly in her fist. Her face was pale, her breath coming in ragged gasps. When she saw Alexander standing there, not in his chauffeur disguise, but as the powerful tycoon who owned her existence, she looked like she was ready to face her executioner.
"Mr. Sterling," she whispered, her voice tight with terror. "I... the power went out. I was just dusting the terminal..."
"Stop lying, Maya," Alexander said, his voice remarkably calm, though it carried a profound, heavy sadness. "I know about the flash drive. I know about the encryption keys you copied. And I know about the locked metal box in the house in South Central."
The mention of the house in South Central struck Maya like a physical blow. She staggered backward, her eyes widening in absolute horror. "You... you followed me? You were the driver last night."
"Yes," Alexander admitted, taking a slow step forward, his hands raised in a non-threatening gesture. "I was the driver. I saw the box. I recognized my father's silver filigree pattern. I needed to know why my housekeeper was carrying a piece of my family's buried history."
A sudden, fierce transformation overtook Maya. The submissive, quiet housekeeper vanished, replaced by a woman fueled by fifteen years of unadulterated, burning rage. She stood tall, her tears spilling over her cheeks, her voice sharp as a razor.
"Your family's buried history?!" she spat, her voice shaking with emotion. "You mean your family's trophy of destruction! Your father murdered my dad, Alexander! Marcus Vance didn't die in an accident! He had a meeting with Arthur Sterling and Kenneth Vance that night to deliver the proof that your company forged his signature on the sale deeds. Two hours later, his workshop was engulfed in chemical accelerants, and he was burned alive inside!"
Alexander felt a cold sweat break out across his skin. Hearing the accusation outlined so clearly made the reality undeniable. "Maya... I swear to you, I didn't know. I was only twelve years old when that project happened. I grew up believing my father was a man of honor."
"Honor?!" Maya laughed, a hollow, bitter sound that echoed off the high walls of the study. "Your wealth is bought with the blood of my father and the suffering of hundreds of families who were thrown into the streets so you could build your logistics empire! I came here to take what belongs to the public. The evidence is on this drive. Go ahead, call the police. Call your security. Put me in jail. But the truth will find its way out!"
"I'm not calling the police, Maya," Alexander said softly, stepping closer until he was standing right in front of her. He reached out and gently placed his hand over her fist, which was still clutching the flash drive. "If my father committed this crime, I won't be an accessory to it by covering it up. Let me see the files. Let us look at the evidence together. If Sterling Global is built on a murder, I will dismantle it myself."
Maya stared at him, her breath hitching as she felt the genuine warmth and desperate sincerity in his touch. She looked into his eyes, searching for the corporate predator she had expected to find, but found only a man carrying a profound, shattering grief.

Before she could answer, the glass window of the study shattered inward with a deafening crash. A heavy, black tear-gas canister rolled across the Persian rug, spewing a thick, choking white cloud into the room.
Kenneth’s mercenaries had arrived to clean up the evidence permanently.
