Chapter 7 - The Ambush at the Rail Yards

The south rail yards were a dark, desolate maze of rusting iron shipping containers, rotting wooden ties, and blowing snow.

The air was deafeningly quiet—until the gunshots started.

Vincent stood pinned behind a steel container, his custom automatic pistol barking into the darkness as automatic rifle fire tore through the metal above his head. Four of his men were already down. The remaining four were holding off a horde of Marcone gunmen closing in from three directions.

"Boss!" one of his lieutenants yelled, reloading his weapon. "They knew we were coming! It was a setup!"

Vincent’s mind raced, his jaw set in a hard, grim line. He was out of ammunition, surrounded, and the cold reality of betrayal washed over him. Frank Vance had been the only one who knew the exact timing of this shipment.

So this is how it ends, Vincent thought bitterly, checking his last magazine. Three rounds left. I saved my mother, I protected the girl... but I couldn't protect myself.

Suddenly, the blinding headlights of an armored Suburban crashed through the wooden security gates of the rail yard, tearing across the gravel at sixty miles an hour.

The heavy SUV swerved violently, slamming directly into two Marcone gunmen, throwing them into the snow, and screeched to a halt right between Vincent’s container and the main sniper nest.

The rear door flew open.

"GET IN!" Mateo screamed over the roar of heavy gunfire, firing a submachine gun into the darkness to cover them.

Vincent didn't hesitate. He grabbed his surviving men and dove into the back of the SUV.

As the heavy door slammed shut, Vincent looked toward the front passenger seat.

Sitting there, holding a heavy tactical flashlight, her face pale but her eyes fierce as fire, was Chloe.

"What in God's name are you doing here?!" Vincent roared, grabbing her shoulders, his voice cracking with sheer terror and fury. "I told you to stay at the estate!"

"Frank Vance betrayed you!" Chloe shouted back over the sound of bullets hammering harmlessly against the SUV’s bulletproof glass. "He leaked the coordinates to Dante! If I hadn't come, you’d be dead!"

Vincent froze, the rage instantly evaporating from his chest, replaced by an overwhelming, suffocating realization. She had driven straight into a warzone, into a storm of bullets, just to save his life.

"Mateo! Floor it!" Vincent ordered.

The armored SUV roared backward, crashing through a secondary gate and tearing out onto the main industrial highway, disappearing into the blinding snowstorm before the Marcone forces could mobilize their chase vehicles.

Inside the quiet cabin of the SUV, Vincent pulled Chloe into his arms, holding her so tightly she could barely breathe. He buried his face in her neck, his body shaking with a violent, terrifying surge of emotion.

"You crazy, brilliant, impossible woman," Vincent whispered, his voice trembling—a sound Mateo had never heard in fifteen years of service. "You came for me."

May you like

Chloe wrapped her arms around his back, resting her head against his broad chest, feeling his heart pounding wildly against his ribs.

"I told you, Vincent," she murmured softly into his coat. "You survive for me. And I don't let anyone touch what's mine."
