Chapter 9 - The End of Marcone

The final strike against Dante Marcone did not take place in a dark alley or a smoke-filled warehouse.
It happened in the daylight, at the Federal District Courthouse in downtown Chicago.
While Vincent’s forces systematically dismantled Marcone's illegal shipping operations across the city, Chloe was working on a far more devastating weapon: the paper trail.
Using her sharp analytical skills and the unrestricted access Vincent had granted her to the syndicate's financial ledgers, Chloe had uncovered twenty years of tax fraud, extortion records, and human trafficking logs connected directly to Dante Marcone’s legitimate holding companies.
She didn't hand them to Vincent to execute a bloody hit.
She handed them directly to the United States Attorney’s Office.
At 2:00 PM on a crisp Friday afternoon, federal agents swarmed Dante Marcone’s penthouse estate, slapping heavy steel handcuffs on the rival boss before he could even reach his armored car. Facing racketeering, attempted murder, and federal tax evasion charges, Dante was sentenced to life without parole in a federal maximum-security prison.
The Marcone empire collapsed overnight.
The war was over.
That evening, the Rossi estate was quiet. The snow had stopped falling, replaced by a clear, starry night sky reflected over the dark waters of Lake Michigan.
Vincent and Chloe stood on the private balcony of the master suite in the east wing—a suite Chloe had officially moved into three days earlier.
Vincent wrapped his heavy wool coat around her shoulders from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder, his arms holding her tightly against his warm chest.
"You destroyed a syndicate boss without firing a single bullet," Vincent murmured into her ear, a hint of deep, proud laughter in his voice.
"Bullets are loud, noisy, and mess up the carpet," Chloe smiled, leaning back against his chest, her hands resting over his. "Federal indictments are much cleaner."
Vincent turned her around in his arms, looking down at her face beneath the moonlight. The pale, fragile waitress who had bled on a diner floor was gone, replaced by a powerful, brilliant, magnificent woman who had claimed his heart, his name, and his world.
"I married you to make you untouchable, Chloe," Vincent said softly, his dark eyes filled with an overwhelming, profound tenderness. "I thought I was giving you a shield. I never expected that you would become the only person who could save me."

"I didn't need a shield, Vincent," Chloe whispered, her hazel eyes shining with unconditional love as she reached up to touch his sharp jaw. "I needed someone worth fighting for."
Vincent smiled—a warm, radiant smile that belonged only to her—and brought his lips down onto hers in a deep, sweet, eternal kiss.
