Chapter 10 - The True Inheritance

Six months later, the bitter mountain winds had given way to the brilliant, vibrant green of an alpine summer.

The rotting logging cabin was gone, replaced by a sprawling, beautiful timber-and-stone estate that blended seamlessly into the pine ridge. There was electricity now, running water, and a kitchen that always smelled of fresh bread and baking apple pies.

On the wide cedar veranda overlooking the valley, Monica sat in a comfortable rocking chair, watching Emily and Grace chase a laughing, toddling Leo across the manicured lawn. The baby was healthy, robust, and radiating a joyful energy that filled the entire estate with life.

A heavy, warm hand rested gently on Monica’s shoulder.

She looked up. Alistair Vance—dressed in a simple flannel shirt and jeans, looking less like a ruthless corporate tyrant and more like a proud grandfather—smiled down at her.

"The board of directors in New York is still having a collective heart attack over my decision to restructure the entire philanthropic wing of the company under your management," Alistair chuckled, pulling up a rocking chair beside her.

"Let them panic," Monica replied with a serene, confident smile, leaning back against the wood. "Someone needs to teach them how the other half lives."

"Indeed they do," Alistair agreed softly. He looked out across the lawn, watching Leo stumble forward and crash into a patch of wildflowers, laughing as Emily hoisted him up onto her shoulders. "You know, Monica... when I found you in that alley, I thought I was hunting thieves."

"And instead?" Monica asked, turning her head to meet his gaze.

"Instead," Alistair said, his voice rich with absolute peace, "I finally found a home."

Down on the lawn, Leo let out a bright, unrestrained laugh that carried up to the veranda, mingling with the rustle of the pine trees and the warm summer breeze. The garbage-picking twins had found a baby in the trash; and in return, they had rescued a billionaire's soul.
