Chapter 2 - The Man in the Shadow

Monica’s breath hitched. She froze, her hand hovering instinctively over the box where the baby slept. The knock came again, louder this time, rattling the rusted hinges of the door.

"Open up," a voice commanded from the outside. It wasn't loud, but it carried an icy, controlled authority that made the hair on the back of Monica’s neck stand up. "We know you're in there, Mrs. Vance—or should I say, Monica."

Vance?

Monica gasped silently. She hadn't used that surname in five years—not since the night she fled the sprawling, gated estate of her former employer, billionaire industrialist and ruthless shipping magnate Alistair Vance, after a catastrophic fire that had allegedly consumed his entire family.

She backed away from the door, her heart threatening to burst out of her chest. How had they found her? How had anyone tracked her to this godforsaken alleyway at the edge of the industrial district?

The door didn't just open; it splintered inward with a single, brutal kick.

Heavy boots crunched on the rotting floorboards as two men in tailored black suits stepped into the cramped room. Their shoulders filled the narrow hallway, their faces cast in deep shadows beneath wide-brimmed hats. But it was the third man who stepped in behind them that made Monica’s blood run completely cold.

Tall, impeccably dressed in a charcoal-grey overcoat, with silver-streaked hair and eyes that looked like shattered obsidian, Alistair Vance stepped into the hovel. He looked around the squalid room with an expression of profound, sterile disgust, before his cold gaze finally landed on Monica.

"Monica," Alistair said, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that seemed to suck all the warmth out of the air. "It has been a long time. I see you’ve upgraded your accommodations."

Monica threw herself defensively in front of the cardboard box, spreading her arms wide to shield the sleeping baby. "You can't have him, Alistair. He's mine. You threw him away, but he's mine now!"

Alistair stopped dead in his tracks. A flicker of genuine confusion crossed his severe features, quickly replaced by a dark, dangerous scowl. "What are you rambling about, woman? I didn't come here for your pathetic games. I came because my grandson was stolen from his hospital bassoon three nights ago, and my security network traced the burner phone used by the kidnapper to a cell tower precisely four hundred yards from this alley."

Monica blinked, the words crashing against her mind like waves against a cliff. His grandson.

She looked down at the infant, then back up at the terrifying billionaire standing in her ruined doorway. The pieces clicked together with terrifying clarity.

The baby wasn't just an abandoned child. He was the sole heir to the Vance empire. And Alistair Vance had no idea he was standing three feet away from him.
