Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Choice

"No!" Emily suddenly screamed from behind the chest. She darted out from her hiding place, running straight toward Alistair and throwing her small arms around his expensive trouser leg, beating her tiny fists against his shins. "Don't take him! He's our baby! Leave us alone!"
"Emily, no! Get back!" Monica screamed in horror.
Alistair looked down at the five-year-old girl clinging to his leg. For a microsecond, a strange, unreadable shadow passed over his hardened features—a fleeting ghost of something resembling humanity. But it vanished as quickly as it came. With cold, practiced efficiency, he reached down and gently but firmly detached Emily’s hands, pushing her back toward her sister.
"Children," Alistair said coldly, straightening his coat. "Always so emotional. Logistically inconvenient, yet easily managed."
He turned his full, terrifying gaze back to Monica. "You have two choices, Monica. You can hand the boy to me willingly, and I will ensure you and your daughters are quietly escorted back to the city with enough cash to never work another day in your wretched lives. Or... my men—who are currently surrounding this cabin with automatic weapons—will storm the building, take the child by force, and charge you with kidnapping, grand larceny, and child endangerment. You'll spend the rest of your natural life behind bars, while your daughters are thrown into the state foster care system."
The silence in the cabin became absolute. The fire crackled, a mocking soundtrack to the destruction of Monica’s entire world.
She looked down at Leo. The baby had stopped squirming. He was looking up at her with those dark, innocent eyes, completely unaware that he was the prize in a war between unimaginable wealth and desperate, unconditional love.
If she fought, she would die, her daughters would be thrown into the nightmare of the foster system, and Alistair would still take the boy.
If she surrendered, she would lose the baby who had healed a piece of her broken heart, but she would save her daughters.
Monica closed her eyes, a single, heavy tear carving a clean path through the soot on her cheek. She kissed Leo’s forehead once—a long, agonizingly tender farewell.
"Take him," Monica whispered, her voice breaking entirely.
She stepped forward and placed the infant gently into Alistair Vance’s outstretched arms.
Alistair looked down at his grandson. For the first time since he entered the cabin, his mask of absolute control slipped. His hands—usually steady as steel—shook slightly as he cradled the infant against his chest. He looked at the baby's face, then up at Monica, who stood broken and weeping before him.

"You raised him well for three weeks, Monica," Alistair said, his voice uncharacteristically soft. "I'll give you that."
He turned toward the door, carrying the child away into the cold mountain wind.
