Chapter 3 - The Dangerous Bluff

Silence stretched heavy and suffocating in the small shack. Emily and Grace whimpered softly in their sleep on the mattress in the corner, stirred by the noise but too exhausted to wake fully.

Alistair Vance narrowed his obsidian eyes, taking a slow, measured step forward. His gaze flicked from Monica’s terrified, defiant face down to the cardboard box at her feet. Because of the angle and the dim light, the baby was entirely obscured by the ragged flannel blanket Monica had thrown over the edge.

"Step aside, Monica," Alistair ordered, his hand slipping inside his overcoat. A subtle metallic click signaled the presence of a firearm. "I have no patience tonight. My son’s legacy is missing, and I don't intend to leave empty-handed. If you've been harboring smugglers or ransom drop points, I will level this entire district before sunrise."

Monica’s mind raced at lightspeed. If Alistair looked into that box, he would instantly recognize the family birthmark—a faint, crescent-shaped pale patch behind the infant's left ear—or he would simply take the child by force, condemning him to the cold, loveless cages of the Vance corporate dynasty where children were raised as commodities rather than human beings.

She couldn't let him take the baby. Not back to that monster.

"You're looking in the wrong place, Alistair," Monica said, forcing her voice to remain steady despite the violent trembling in her limbs. She took a deliberate step forward, putting herself directly in his line of sight, blocking his view of the box. "If your grandson was stolen three nights ago, why would he be in a rat-infested slum like this? Do you really think petty criminals hide a billionaire's heir in a box of old bottles?"

Alistair’s jaw tightened. He stopped two paces from her, towering over her frail frame. The scent of expensive cologne and ozone washed over her. "My investigators never make mistakes. The signal originated here."

"A burner phone signal can be bounced, Alistair," Monica lied smoothly, her heart pounding against her ribs like a sledgehammer. "You built an empire on global logistics; surely you know how easy it is to spoof a tower ping. Some punk probably threw a burner out of a moving car on the highway overpass."

For a tense, agonizing moment, Alistair stared down at her. His eyes searched her face, looking for any micro-expression of guilt or deception. Monica held his gaze, channeling every ounce of motherly fury and desperation she possessed into an unyielding mask of defiance.

Finally, Alistair let out a cold, dismissive snort. "You haven't changed, Monica. Still hiding in the filth, still thinking you can outsmart me." He turned sharply to his lead henchman. "Check the perimeter warehouses. If this is a dead end, burn the lead and find me the hospital administrator who leaked the birth records."

As the guards turned toward the door, Alistair paused, casting one last lingering look around the squalid room. His eyes briefly drifted toward the corner where Emily and Grace lay shivering.

"It's a miserable life you've chosen for yourself, Monica," Alistair murmured quietly, almost to himself. "A pity."

Then, with a sweep of his dark overcoat, he walked out into the freezing night, leaving the door hanging off its splintered hinges.
