Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Battlefield

The headquarters of Aegis Biotech was a monolith of glass and steel, a monument to corporate greed. Seven years ago, I was banned from this building, escorted out by security guards on Evelyn's orders while I was still recovering in the hospital. Today, I walked through the front doors, my heels clicking sharply against the polished marble floor.
I was flanked by Liam and Emma, both dressed in sharp, tailored suits. They were no longer the weeping children from the driveway; they were my executive board.
As we entered the top-floor boardroom, the chatter died instantly. Evelyn sat at the head of the mahogany table, looking regal but visibly frayed. Beside her sat several nervous-looking board members and a team of high-priced defense attorneys.
"Sarah," Evelyn said, her voice tight. "You have no standing here. This is a private board meeting."
"Actually, Evelyn, she does," Liam stepped forward, throwing a thick folder onto the center of the table. "As of 8:00 AM this morning, Apex Medical Consulting has acquired a controlling fifty-one percent stake in Aegis Biotech. My mother is no longer just a guest. She is your boss."
The board members gasped, murmuring in panic. Evelyn’s face drained of color. She looked at me, her eyes darting to my legs, which were standing firmly, supporting my weight without a single tremor.
"You... you can walk," she whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of awe and sheer terror. "It's impossible. The medical reports said your spine was severed."
"The medical reports you bribed the doctors to write so you could declare me incompetent and seize my trust funds?" I asked, taking a seat at the opposite end of the table. I crossed my legs elegantly. "You underestimated my intellect, Evelyn. And you underestimated the loyalty of the medical community. The doctors didn't lie to me; they lied to you to keep you from realizing I was recovering."
"This is a hostile takeover!" one of the board members shouted. "We will fight this in court!"
"With what money?" Emma chimed in, her voice cool and precise. "By noon today, the FDA will issue a total recall of your flagship neuro-drug, Aegis-9. The formulas were falsified. We have the original data, signed by David and authorized by Evelyn. Your company is technically bankrupt. The only thing of value left is your intellectual property, which we now own."
Evelyn stood up, her hands shaking as she pressed them against the table. "You think you've won? I will drag your name through the mud, Sarah! I will tell the world you abandoned your husband when he was arrested!"

"David is already singing like a canary to the federal prosecutors, Evelyn," I replied softly. "He has traded you for a reduced sentence. By tomorrow, you will be indicted for corporate sabotage, attempted murder, and child endangerment."
The room fell into a deathly silence. Evelyn sank back into her chair, looking suddenly very old, very frail, and utterly defeated.
