Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

The next morning, the storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, clean sky.
The police and search-and-rescue teams had recovered Evelyn’s body two miles downriver. She had not survived the fall. The Vance empire was officially dead, its assets liquidated, its name permanently tarnished.
David, sitting in a federal holding cell, signed a full confession, detailing every crime he and his mother had committed. In exchange for his cooperation, he was spared the death penalty but was sentenced to life without parole. He would spend the rest of his days in a maximum-security prison, forgotten and penniless.
I sat in my office at the newly rebranded Sterling Biotech. The board members who had once sneered at me now stood outside my door, waiting for my instructions.
Liam walked in, carrying a cup of coffee. He looked exhausted but incredibly at peace.
"It’s over, Mom," he said, sitting on the edge of my desk. "The lawyers finalized the restructuring. All of Aegis's assets have been transferred to the Sterling Foundation. We’re officially launching the free pediatric neuro-rehabilitation clinic next month."

"We did it, Liam," I said, looking at the plaque on my desk that read Dr. Sarah Sterling, CEO. "We took their poison and turned it into medicine."
"You did it, Mom," Liam corrected gently. "You walked so we could run."
