Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Sanctuary

Six months later, we stood in front of the old Vance mansion.
It had been put up for public auction after the state seized it. I bought it back for a fraction of its value. But we weren't going to live in it. The walls held too many memories of betrayal, of cold dinners and whispered insults.
Instead, I had hired a team of architects to completely demolish the mansion. In its place, we built The Sterling Sanctuary—a state-of-the-art rehabilitation center for children recovering from spinal cord injuries and trauma.
Today was the grand opening.
The gardens where Evelyn had once yelled at my children were now filled with playground equipment designed for kids of all abilities. The long driveway where we had once dragged our meager belongings was now a paved walkway lined with cherry blossoms.
"Mom, look!" Maya called out.
She was running through the grass with a group of young children, some in wheelchairs, some on crutches, all laughing. Maya was the ambassador of the sanctuary, her bright, resilient spirit guiding the other kids.
Emma and Noah were busy setting up the reception area, greeting the doctors and donors who had come from all over the world to witness the launch of the Sterling Protocol.
I felt a warm hand slip into mine. It was Liam.
May you like
"You look beautiful, Dr. Sterling," he smiled.
"I feel whole, Liam," I replied. "For the first time in seven years."
