Chapter 4 - The Contents of Locker 404

The vault of Metro Bank had smelled of old paper, cold steel, and the heavy security of old money. Leo had stood quietly beside Mr. Hale as the heavy steel door of Locker 404 clicked open, revealing a thick, leather-bound journal and a stack of microfiche tapes dated from the winter of 2014.
Now, sitting in the secure conference room of Hale & Associates, the true magnitude of the discovery lay spread out beneath the bright LED lights.
"This isn't just about a hidden child, Leo," Mr. Hale said, his voice laced with an intense, quiet gravity as he turned the pages of the journal. "This is a record of a massive corporate crime. Twelve years ago, the Vale Corporation was launching its first major public offering. But their primary laboratory in the north district had a catastrophic chemical leak that contaminated the local water supply—the very district where your mother, Marianne, lived."
Leo leaned forward, his hands gripping the edge of the table. "Is that why she was sick? Is that why her heart failed?"
"Yes," Mr. Hale said, his eyes filled with a fierce, protective anger. "Marianne was one of the lead research assistants who discovered the contamination. She was pregnant with you at the time. When she threatened to go to the federal environmental protection board, Victoria Vale personally intervened. They discovered Marianne was unmarried, young, and vulnerable. Victoria used your birth as leverage. She told Marianne that if she went public with the chemical reports, the Vale legal team would frame her for industrial espionage, take the baby away permanently, and ensure she spent the rest of her life in a maximum-security prison."
Mrs. Chen, who was sitting in the corner knitting a sweater for Leo, let out a soft cry. "Those monsters. They traded a baby's life for their corporate stock prices."
"They did," Mr. Hale confirmed. "Victoria forced Marianne to sign the parental surrender documents, pretending the baby was born out of a scandalous affair, completely hiding the fact that you were the biological heir to a separate family legacy. They gave you to Marianne to raise in poverty, cutting off the medical funds the moment the public eye shifted away."
Leo looked down at the handwriting in the journal—his mother’s neat, careful script detailing every doctor's appointment she couldn't afford, every night she sat awake watching him sleep, terrified that the Vales would come back to finish what they started.

"What do we do now, Mr. Hale?" Leo asked, his voice steadying, the small boy inside him growing stronger by the hour.
"We don't just sue them for custody or money, Leo," Mr. Hale declared, picking up his phone to dial the federal district attorney. "We dismantle their entire empire. Tomorrow, the federal marshals are going to pay a visit to the Vale Corporation."
