Chapter 8 - The Verdict of Time

The final criminal sentencing of Julian and Victoria Vale took place on a bright, crisp autumn morning in late October. The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity with journalists, legal scholars, and members of the public who had followed Leo’s journey from the hotel canopy to the halls of justice.
The federal judge, a stern, unyielding man with decades of experience, spent an hour reading the impact statements and the history of the environmental cover-up that had cost Marianne her life.
"The behavior exhibited by the defendants," the judge stated, his voice echoing off the wood-paneled walls, "is a textbook definition of corporate depravity and human cruelty. You weaponized your immense wealth to exploit the vulnerable, to suppress dangerous truths that affected the public health, and to discard a child as if he were a liability on a balance sheet."
He brought his gavel down with a thunderous crack. "Victoria Vale is sentenced to fifteen years at the Federal Correctional Institution for women, with no possibility of parole. Julian Vale is sentenced to twelve years for corporate fraud and environmental conspiracy. Restitution to the Marianne Cole Sanctuary foundation is ordered in full."
As the marshals led the couple out through the heavy double doors, the courtroom erupted into loud, spontaneous applause. Mr. Hale turned to Leo, a massive, triumphant smile breaking across his face as he pulled the boy into a tight, brotherly embrace.

"We did it, Leo," Mr. Hale whispered. "Your mother’s name is completely cleared. The truth is officially part of history."
Leo smiled, his chest filling with a deep, profound sense of peace. The storm that had followed him his entire life had finally run out of rain.
