Chapter 5 - The Public Reckoning
By Friday morning, the city was gripped by a media frenzy that hadn't been seen in decades. The contrast between the glamorous, philanthropic facade of Victoria Vale and the grim reality of a dying mother left in the freezing rain had triggered a national conversation about wealth, accountability, and justice.
Protesters gathered outside the gates of the Vale Estate and the corporate headquarters downtown, holding signs featuring the photograph Leo had held up at the hotel—the nineteen-year-old girl holding her baby.
The federal prosecutor’s office acted with unprecedented speed. Armed with the environmental data, the journal logs, and the evidence of financial fraud regarding the emptied trust fund, a grand jury issued indictments for twenty separate criminal counts against Victoria and Julian Vale.
I watched the live news broadcast from the small, safe apartment Mr. Hale had provided for Leo and Mrs. Chen.
“Breaking News,” the anchor announced, the screen showing footage of federal agents wheeling boxes of confiscated documents out of the Vale building. “Victoria Vale, prominent socialite and billionaire heiress, has been taken into federal custody alongside her husband, Julian Vale. The charges include corporate environmental cover-up, systematic witness intimidation, and grand larceny regarding the multi-million-dollar trust fund of her biological son, Leo Cole.”
Leo sat on the sofa, a warm mug of cocoa between his hands. The cheap, wet jacket was gone, replaced by a comfortable woolen sweater. He watched the screen as Victoria was led out of the courthouse in handcuffs, a coat thrown over her head to hide her face from the very cameras she had spent her life courting.

"She looks small now, Mom," Leo whispered, looking up at the framed photograph of Marianne he had placed on the mantelpiece.
"She was always small, Leo," Mrs. Chen said gently, placing a plate of fresh cookies on the table. "She just had a lot of money to make herself look big. But the truth is the biggest thing in the world."
