Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Queen (The Happy Ending)

Later that evening, after the gala had ended and the city lights twinkled across the dark waters of Lake Michigan, I returned home.
The mansion was warm, quiet, and filled with peace.
I walked upstairs to the nursery. Lily was fast asleep in her crib, clutching a small pale yellow blanket—the exact same blanket she had been wrapped in the day we came home from the hospital.
I gently tucked the blanket around her shoulders and kissed her forehead.
Walking over to the large bay window, I looked out over the front gates, the sprawling lawns, and the towering oak trees standing strong against the night wind.
Marcus was gone. The past was buried. The empire was secure.

I rested my hand against the cool glass of the window, smiling into the dark reflection of my own face.
I was home. I was safe. And I was completely, unconditionally victorious.
