Chapter 5 - The Legal Battlefield

The custody and divorce proceedings began two weeks later in the high-security family courtroom of Judge Helen Thorne—a jurist renowned for having zero tolerance for abusive spouses and financial fraud.

Marcus walked into the courtroom looking like a ghost of his former self. His custom suits were replaced by a faded orange jumpsuit; his hair was uncombed, and dark circles bruised the skin beneath his hollow eyes. He had been appointed a public defender because he could no longer afford private counsel.

I sat across the aisle, flanked by Adrian Wells and a team of top-tier family law specialists. I wore a sharp white silk blouse and a tailored black skirt, holding a leather portfolio containing every piece of evidence documenting Marcus’s financial crimes, emotional abuse, and infidelity.

Judge Thorne shuffled through the dense stack of legal briefs on her desk, her stern eyes scanning the documents before fixing a piercing glare on Marcus.

“Mr. Vale,” Judge Thorne began, her voice echoing coldly in the courtroom. “I have reviewed the emergency petitions, the corporate forensic audits, the restraining order violations, and the medical records detailing your wife’s emergency C-section at the time you chose to abandon her and invite your mistress into her home.”

Marcus swallowed hard, staring nervously at the defense table. “Your Honor, my wife—she manipulated the corporate structures—she’s a powerful woman—she locked me out of everything—!”

“Quiet, Mr. Vale,” Judge Thorne snapped, slamming her pen down on the desk. “You signed a prenuptial agreement voluntarily in 2021. You embezzled corporate funds to support an illicit affair while your wife was recovering from major abdominal surgery. You violated a court-mandated restraining order. And now, you have the audacity to petition this court for marital assets and custody of an infant child you endangered with your reckless behavior.”

“I’m her father!” Marcus stammered desperately.

“You are a convicted felon awaiting trial for financial fraud,” Judge Thorne corrected him sharply.

She picked up her gavel and delivered her ruling with absolute finality.

“The court hereby grants a full, expedited decree of divorce on the grounds of adultery, abandonment, and severe financial fraud. All pre-marital assets, company shares, and properties remain exclusively with the petitioner, Claire Vance-Meridian. Sole physical and legal custody of the minor child, Lily Vance-Meridian, is awarded entirely to the mother, with zero visitation rights granted to the respondent until he undergoes mandatory psychological rehabilitation and settles all federal restitution fines.”

Judge Thorne struck her gavel. Clack.

“Court is adjourned.”

Marcus slumped forward in his chair, burying his face in his cuffed hands as quiet, helpless sobs shook his shoulders. He had wanted to rule the world, but in his greed and arrogance, he had destroyed his own kingdom.
