Chapter 4 - The Counter-Offensive

Within forty-eight hours of his public termination, Marcus Vale went from a high-flying tech CEO to a desperate, broke, and legally hunted man.
Without access to his corporate credit cards, his luxury cars, or his hidden accounts, Marcus discovered that his high-society friends had remarkably short memories. When he called his golf buddies, investment partners, and country club acquaintances asking for emergency loans, phone calls went straight to voicemail. People who once bowed to him in restaurants now pretended not to know him.
Vanessa Cole lasted exactly three days in the cramped, rundown studio apartment Marcus had managed to rent on the rougher side of town using a depleted personal savings account. The moment she realized Marcus had no money, no car, and active federal investigations hanging over his head, she packed her designer bags, blocked his number, and vanished back into the nightlife scene.
Desperate and cornered, Marcus did what weak, arrogant men always do: he escalated.
It was Friday evening. I was resting in the plant-filled sunroom of my Lake Forest mansion, gently rocking Lily to sleep as soft classical music played in the background. My private security team—four elite professionals stationed discreetly around the perimeter—ensured the estate was an impenetrable fortress.
My phone rang. It was an unknown, restricted number.
I pressed answer.
“Emma,” Marcus’s voice hissed through the speaker. He sounded unhinged, his breathing ragged and frantic. “You think you’ve won, don’t you? You think you can ruin my life, throw me out like trash, and take everything I worked for?”
“You worked for nothing, Marcus,” I said calmly, keeping my voice low so as not to wake Lily. “And if you’re calling from a burner phone, I should warn you—Adrian is already tracing the signal. Violating your restraining order is a felony.”
“Screw the restraining order!” Marcus screamed, a manic edge in his voice. “I’m outside the front gates right now! I see your security guards! I know you’re in there with my daughter!”
My blood ran cold, but my mind stayed razor-sharp. I pressed the intercom button on my tablet, instantly alerting the lead security specialist.
“Marcus, listen to me very carefully,” I said, my voice dropping into a lethal whisper. “If you take one step onto this property, you won’t just be violating a restraining order. You will be giving federal marshals the legal right to arrest you on the spot for felony harassment and stalking. Turn around and walk away.”
“You took everything from me!” Marcus sobbed, a pathetic mixture of rage and self-pity. “I’ll make your life a living hell! I’ll contest the divorce! I’ll sue for full custody of Lily! I’ll drag your name through the mud until no one in this city will ever look at you again!”
“Contest what you want, Marcus,” I said, clicking end-call.

Through the sunroom window, I watched as two of my tactical guards smoothly intercepted Marcus at the wrought-iron security gates, pinning him against the stone pillar and slapping steel handcuffs on his wrists before he could even raise his voice again.
Local police arrived within six minutes. By nightfall, Marcus was sitting in a holding cell at the Cook County detention center, facing felony charges of restraining order violations, corporate embezzlement, and harassment.
