Chapter 7 - The Quiet Aftermath

A year after the eviction, the Chicago winter returned with a blanket of glittering white snow.

I hosted a small, intimate dinner party at the mansion to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Vale Meridian’s successful corporate restructuring. Only trusted advisors, close friends, and family members who had stood by me through the darkest days were in attendance.

Uncle Arthur—now chairman emeritus of the board—raised his crystal glass of champagne during the toast.

“To Claire,” Arthur said, his voice ringing out warmly across the dining room. “A woman who didn't just build an empire, but had the courage to tear down the walls when toxic weeds tried to choke it.”

I smiled, looking around the candlelit room. The dark days of bleeding on the marble floor, listening to Marcus demand I get out of my own home, felt like a lifetime ago. I had survived the fire, cleansed the slate, and proven that true power never belonged to those who shouted the loudest—it belonged to those who held the keys.
