Chapter 10 - The True Sunrise

One year later.

The Marchetti estate was no longer known as a fortress of fear. Under Damian’s leadership, the syndicate’s illegal operations had been completely liquidated, transformed into global shipping networks, real estate development, and the newly opened Rosalie Vance Children's Foundation—a hundred-million-dollar charity dedicated to protecting orphaned children and supporting single mothers across the state.

The heavy iron gates of the estate were left open during the day, allowing the warm summer breeze from the lake to blow through the blooming gardens.

I sat on a wide velvet blanket spread across the green back lawn, watching the sunset over the calm blue water.

Beside me, three-year-old Leo and Mateo were playing tag with Brutus, a massive, gentle German Shepherd puppy Damian had bought them for their birthday. Their bright, ringing laughter echoed across the grass, full of pure, unburdened joy.

Damian walked out from the terrace, dressed in a comfortable linen shirt, carrying a tray with fresh iced tea and a plate of sliced fruit.

He set the tray down, sitting behind me on the blanket, pulling me back against his broad chest. He wrapped his strong arms around my waist, resting his chin gently on my shoulder.

"You look deep in thought, my queen," Damian murmured softly, kissing my cheek.

"I was just thinking about that rainy Sunday afternoon at the diner," I smiled, turning my head to look into his gray eyes. "How terrified I was when you walked through those doors."

"And now?" he asked, a playful, loving smirk touching his lips.

"Now I realize that storm was the greatest blessing of my life," I whispered, reaching back to trail my fingers through his dark hair.

Little Sophia came running across the lawn, holding a bright yellow dandelion she had picked from the grass. She plunked down right between us, her hazel eyes sparkling with absolute happiness.

"For you, Mama!" she beamed, pressing the flower into my hand. "And for Papa!"

Damian scooped her up, lifting her high into the air as she squealed with delight, before pulling her down to give her a big kiss on her tummy, making her laugh hysterically.

Leo and Mateo saw the fun and came tumbling over, throwing themselves onto Damian’s back, all three toddlers giggling and piling over their father on the warm grass.

I leaned back against the cushion, holding the yellow dandelion against my chest, watching my husband rolling around in the grass with our three healthy, beautiful children.

The grief that had once consumed my soul was gone, replaced by a love so vast and deep it filled every corner of my life.

The door was open, the shadows were banished, and our family was finally home.
