Chapter 6 - The Lie That Saved Us

Donato froze, his smile vanishing instantly. "What... what nonsense is this?"

"Fourteen months ago," Damian said, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the table, his gray eyes locking onto Donato like steel blades, "before my brother Julian passed away, I entered into a private biological surrogacy agreement with Miss Elena Vance. The medical records Julian held were a cover to protect my future heirs from hitmen like you."

The entire room erupted into whispers.

I kept my face completely composed, exactly as Damian had rehearsed with me the night before. I looked Donato straight in the eye, my posture regal, my hand resting gently over Damian’s on the table.

"Dr. Harold Vance was arrested three weeks ago by federal agents for attempting to falsify those records to steal my family's estate," I spoke up, my voice clear, confident, and filled with unbroken authority. "If any man at this table questions the bloodline of my children, you are welcome to step forward and take a sample right now."

Donato stared at me, his mouth opening and closing like a landed fish. He looked at Damian, then at the three toddlers sitting beside us.

Leo looked up from his small chair, stared at Donato with his bright hazel eyes, and let out a soft, happy laugh, reaching over to grab Damian’s thumb. Damian picked the boy up without breaking eye contact with Donato, settling Leo onto his lap with practiced, natural ease.

The visual was absolute. The power dynamic was unmistakable.

"The DNA results are certified by three independent state laboratories attached to that court filing, Donato," Damian added softly, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "So I ask you now, in front of the entire Council... are you calling me a liar?"

Donato looked around the room. The other five crime bosses were nodding slowly, completely convinced by the official court documents, the children’s striking resemblance to Damian’s commanding presence, and the sheer, unshakeable confidence of the couple sitting before them.

"No..." Donato stammered, pulling back into his chair, sweating profusely under his collar. "No... Don Marchetti. If the court has certified the bloodline... then the Board recognizes your heirs."

"Good," Damian said, standing up with Leo in his arms. He reached out his other hand to me. I took it, holding Sophia tight as Marcus gathered Mateo.

"Because if anyone ever speaks the word 'bastard' in front of my wife again," Damian announced, his cold eyes sweeping over every man in the room, "I will personally erase their family name from this city."

May you like

My heart pounded violently against my ribs at the word.

Wife.
