Chapter 4 - The Board's Ultimatum

For three weeks, the Marchetti estate transformed from a cold mafia fortress into a sanctuary of warmth and life.
With proper nutrition, love, and constant maternal care, Leo, Mateo, and Sophia blossomed. Their tiny cheeks filled out, their laughter echoed through the grand marble hallways, and their developmental milestones exploded. Leo began speaking full sentences, Mateo learned to stack building blocks to the ceiling, and little Sophia refused to eat her breakfast unless I was sitting right beside her.
Damian, too, changed. The feared mob boss who had once commanded a city with an iron fist found himself sitting on the thick nursery carpet every evening after work, letting three toddlers climb over his expensive suits while I read them bedtime stories.
A quiet, unspoken tension began to grow between us—a slow, deep bond built on mutual respect, shared devotion to the children, and an undeniable, magnetic pull that grew stronger every day.
However, the storm outside the gates was gathering fast.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, Marcus entered Damian’s private study where I was helping Leo paint with watercolors.
"Boss," Marcus said gravely, setting a thick silver envelope onto the desk. "The Syndicate Board has called an emergency summit at the Grand Hotel downtown for tomorrow night. Don Donato is challenging the children's inheritance."
Damian didn't look up from his papers. "Donato is a greedy old dog. On what grounds?"
"He claims Julian died without a verified biological heir," Marcus replied. "Word leaked from Saint Jude’s Hospital about Dr. Vance’s arrest. Donato suspects the triplets aren't Julian’s blood. He’s demanding a public DNA verification in front of the six Syndicate families tomorrow night. If we refuse, he invokes the Blood Law."
I dropped my paintbrush, the red paint splattering across the wooden desk. "The Blood Law? What is that?"
"It’s an ancient syndicate rule," Damian explained, his jaw tightening. "If an heir's bloodline is questioned and unproven, the asset holdings revert to the Board, and the children are stripped of their family protection. In simple terms... Donato intends to eliminate the triplets so he can seize control of the Marchetti empire."
"They're just babies!" I cried out, grabbing Damian’s arm. "They're fourteen months old!"
"Calm down, Elena," Damian said softly, taking my hand and kissing the back of my knuckles—a gesture so natural and tender it made my heart skip a beat. "Donato thinks he’s cornering a weakened lion. He has no idea who he’s dealing with."
"What are you going to do?" I asked, my voice trembling.
Damian stood up, pulling his velvet suit jacket over his broad shoulders. His gray eyes burned with a lethal, terrifying intelligence.
"Tomorrow night, we attend the summit," Damian said smoothly. "You, me, and our children."
May you like
"Our children?" I repeated, my breath catching in my throat.
"Donato wants a bloodline, Elena," Damian smiled—a cold, beautiful, predatory smile. "We are going to give him one he will never forget."
