Chapter 2 - The Pier on the Charles

Boston in late November was a city of salt, cold iron, and fog.

The piers along the Charles River smelled of diesel fuel, rotting wood, and wet wool. At 2:00 AM, Pier 42 was silent, flanked by towering stacks of rusted shipping containers that blocked the yellow glow of the streetlights.

Matteo Bellini walked down the wet wooden planks wearing a long black cashmere coat, flanked by Marco and four of his most trusted enforcers. In his coat pocket lay the rosary he had kept locked in his desk for three years.

Sitting on an overturned wooden crate at the end of the pier, wrapped in a mink coat, was Vivienne Russo. Behind her stood three heavy-set men in leather jackets, their hands tucked deep into their pockets.

"You took your time, Matteo," Vivienne called out, her voice sharp as glass against the night wind.

"I had to make sure your father wasn't waiting in the shadows, Vivienne," Matteo replied, stopping ten paces away. "Though I suppose old Don Russo is too sick to realize his daughter is liquidating his secret offshore accounts."

Vivienne’s lips curled into a cold, beautiful smile. "My father is dying. The Russo empire is crumbling because he lacked the vision to adapt. He thought alliances were built on loyalty. I know they're built on leverage."

Matteo took a step closer, his eyes narrowing into dark slits. "Why did your brother transfer two million dollars to the Moretti clan three years ago, Vivienne? Why did he pay for the hitmen who targeted my car in Rome?"

Vivienne didn't flinch. She slowly stood up, smoothing the fur of her coat.

"Because Elena was going to ruin everything!" Vivienne hissed, her composure finally cracking to reveal the rotting ambition beneath. "Your father was dying, Matteo. The Bellini and Russo families were supposed to merge through our marriage! That was the arrangement! But then you brought home a schoolteacher from Florence. A nobody. A woman who made you soft, a woman who made you talk about leaving the syndicate!"

Matteo’s jaw set so hard the muscle twitched beneath his skin. "Elena had nothing to do with the business."

"She was taking you away from me!" Vivienne shouted, the fog swallowing her voice. "If you left the family, the merger was dead! My brother did what was necessary to keep you in the fold. He removed the distraction. He thought that once she was gone, you would grieve, return to your senses, and marry me."

The silence that followed her confession was suffocating.

Marco reached for his shoulder holster, but Matteo held up a single, firm hand, stopping his men.

"Your brother didn't work alone," Matteo said, his voice frighteningly calm. "Who gave him the security codes to my estate in Rome?"

Vivienne smirked, pulling a slender silver cigarette case from her handbag. "You think you’re the only one with secrets, Matteo? Look around you. The people who built your world were tired of your morality. But it doesn't matter now. The money in the Boston account is transferred. By morning, I’ll be in Dubai, and you’ll still be mourning a dead woman and playing father to a housekeeper’s brat."

Before she could strike her lighter, a metallic click echoed from the darkness behind the shipping containers.

Four uniformed federal agents stepped out of the fog, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Vance—a man who had been investigating syndicate money laundering for five years.

"Vivienne Russo," Vance announced, holding up an active federal warrant. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and interstate racketeering."

Vivienne’s face drained of color. She whirled around to look at Matteo. "You... you brought the feds?!"

"I promised a child I would choose facts over vengeance," Matteo said, stepping back into the shadows as the federal agents moved in with handcuffs. "You took my wife and child, Vivienne. But you won't take another second of my life."
