Chapter 8 - The Seedlings of Spring

By April, the snow had melted from the hills of Connecticut, giving way to soft green grass, blooming crocuses, and the warm scent of damp earth.

In Elena’s garden, the old rusted iron gate had been removed, replaced by a wide, open archway covered in climbing white roses. The stone walls had been repaired, and a new wooden bench sat beside a small fountain where clear water bubbled happily.

Matteo stood in the center of the garden wearing a simple linen shirt and jeans, his hands covered in dark soil as he helped Lily plant a row of new sunflower seeds.

Grace sat on the wooden bench nearby, holding a sketchpad, her pencil moving smoothly as she drew a picture of Matteo and Lily working together in the dirt.

"Deep enough, Mr. Matteo?" Lily asked, holding up a small wooden trowel.

"Just a little deeper, Lily," Matteo instructed gently, helping her press a dark seed into the warm earth. "Like this. So the roots can grow strong when the rain comes."

"Will they grow as high as the house?" she asked, wiping a smudge of dirt onto her nose.

"Higher," Matteo promised, tapping her nose playfully. "They're going to touch the sky."

Marco walked into the garden carrying a silver tray with a pitcher of lemonade and three glasses. He set it on the wooden bench, looking at his master with a quiet, profound satisfaction.

"The estate accounts are fully settled, Don Matteo," Marco reported with a warm smile. "And... the local school board called. Lily’s enrollment for kindergarten in the fall is confirmed."

Matteo stood up, wiping his hands on a towel, and looked at Marco. "Thank you, Marco. For everything."

"It is my honor, sir," Marco said, bowing his head slightly before turning back toward the house.

Matteo walked over to the wooden bench and sat beside Grace. He looked down at her sketchpad. The drawing captured the light perfectly—showing the sun beaming down on the garden, casting long, warm shadows over the flowers and the two figures working in the dirt.

"You have a beautiful eye, Grace," Matteo whispered, reaching out to tuck a stray strand of dark hair behind her ear.

Grace looked up from her paper, her soft brown eyes holding his gaze with an intensity that made his heart beat faster.

"I learned how to see the beauty again because of you, Matteo," she said softly.

Matteo reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-covered box.

Grace went completely still, her breath catching in her throat.
