Chapter 7 - The Trial of the Syndicate

In January, the federal courthouse in downtown Hartford became the epicenter of the largest mob prosecution in New England history.

Using the financial ledgers recovered from Daniel Marino's memory card, combined with the evidence gathered from Pier 42 in Boston, federal prosecutors unraveled the entire Russo criminal enterprise.

Matteo Bellini sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a dark, impeccably tailored suit. Beside him sat Grace, looking elegant and composed in a dark green wool coat.

Across the courtroom, sitting at the defense table in orange prison jumpsuits, were Vivienne Russo and her aging father, Don Carmine Russo.

Vivienne looked hollowed out, her former glamour stripped away, replaced by the bitter, sunken reality of a woman facing thirty years in a federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Vance stood before the jury, holding up the physical evidence.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury," Vance announced, his voice ringing through the silent courtroom. "The defendants believed they could use murder, extortion, and fear to control their world. They believed that by eliminating Daniel Marino, they could hide their crimes forever. But they failed to account for the courage of a mother, and the power of the truth."

Three days later, the jury returned a unanimous verdict: Guilty on all counts.

As the bailiffs led Vivienne and her father away in chains, Vivienne turned her head to look at Matteo one last time.

She looked for anger in his eyes. She looked for triumph, for hatred, for vengeance.

She found none of it.

Matteo looked at her with pure, quiet indifference—the look of a man who had completely moved beyond the dark world she inhabited. He reached out, took Grace’s hand in his, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright winter afternoon.
