Chapter 4 - The Fortress in the Walls

The library was silent, smelling of leather, old paper, and beeswax.
Grace locked the double doors behind her and dragged a heavy mahogany armchair against the brass handles. Outside, shouting echoed from the grand staircase as the intruders realized the estate’s primary security team had been neutralized by a gas attack in the guardhouse.
Grace ran to the massive oak desk. She reached beneath the right drawer, her fingers frantically searching until she felt a small, raised brass stud.
She pressed it firmly.
With a low, heavy hydraulic hiss, a five-foot section of the floor-to-ceiling bookshelf slid forward two inches and swung open like a vault door, revealing a small, steel-lined room equipped with independent air filtration, emergency monitors, and a landline connected directly to the state police.
"Inside, Lily! Go!" Grace cried gently, pushing her daughter into the lit steel room.
Before Grace could step inside herself, the heavy mahogany double doors of the library splintered with a violent CRASH.
A tall, broad-shouldered man in a black tactical jacket burst through the splintered wood, a silenced pistol raised in his right hand.
"There you are, pretty lady," the man sneered, his yellowed teeth showing in the dim moonlight. "Don Russo sends his regards."
He lunged across the rug, grabbing Grace by her hair and slamming her against the edge of the oak desk. Grace screamed, fighting back with wild, maternal fury, scratching at his eyes, but his grip was like iron.
"Mama!" Lily shrieked from inside the panic room.
"Stay inside, Lily! Press the red button!" Grace screamed, using all her strength to kick the man in the shin.
The man grunted in pain, raising his pistol to strike Grace with the heavy steel butt.
Suddenly, a deafening BOOM echoed through the library.
The man’s body jerked violently. He dropped his gun, staggered backward two steps, and collapsed face-first onto the Persian rug.
Standing in the ruined doorway of the library, soaked with rain, his long black coat covered in road grit, stood Matteo Bellini. In his right hand, a heavy caliber pistol smoked in the cold air. Behind him, Marco and six heavily armed Bellini enforcers swept into the room, securing the hallways with lethal efficiency.
Matteo dropped his weapon onto the desk, sprinting across the room, and caught Grace as her knees gave out.
"Grace!" Matteo roared, pulling her into his arms, his large body trembling as he held her against his chest. "Grace, look at me! Are you hurt? Look at me!"
Grace sobbed, her hands clutching his wet coat, her face buried in his neck. "Matteo... Matteo, you came back... you came back..."
"I promised," he choked out, his voice cracking with emotion he hadn't allowed himself to feel in three years.
From inside the panic room, a small figure stepped out onto the Persian rug. Lily looked at the fallen intruder, then at Matteo holding her mother.
She walked over slowly, stopped beside them, and reached out her small, soft hand, resting it gently on Matteo’s wet arm.

"You came back," Lily whispered, a small, triumphant smile breaking across her sweet face. "The sunflowers are still alive."
Matteo lowered his head, reaching out with his free arm to pull the four-year-old child into the embrace, holding both mother and daughter against his heart while the storm outside finally began to fade.
