Chapter 5 - THE THIRTEEN-DAY STORM

The check was delivered to Saint Nicholas Hospital the very next morning. Dr. Kalu confirmed that Deborah was scheduled for her life-saving heart surgery in ten days, once her vital signs stabilized. For the first time in years, the weight crushing Naomi’s chest lifted, allowing her to breathe deeply.
With her mind at peace regarding her daughter, Naomi poured her entire soul into her work at the Carter mansion.
The transformation over the next fortnight was nothing short of miraculous.
Naomi introduced structure to the triplets' lives. She didn't use harsh punishments; instead, she used natural consequences and relentless emotional consistency. When Daniel threw a plate of vegetables, he wasn't sent to his room in anger; instead, Naomi sat with him and taught him how to wash the ruined tablecloth by hand. When Diana tried to manipulate the house staff by pulling rank, Naomi established a daily routine where the triplets helped Mrs. Adebayo set the grand dinner table, teaching them humility and respect for service.
More importantly, Naomi began bridging the massive chasm between Ethan and his children.
She encouraged Ethan to sit with them for breakfast every morning before heading to his corporate headquarters. At first, the breakfasts were awkward and silent. Ethan was used to reviewing financial reports on his iPad, while the children stared at their cereal.
"Mr. Carter," Naomi said one morning, placing a fresh plate of hot plantains on the table. "Daniel built a scale model of an oil tanker out of Lego bricks yesterday. He wanted to know if your real ships have twin screws or single propellers."
Ethan looked up from his tablet, surprised. He looked at Daniel, whose eyes were fixed intently on his orange juice, trying to look indifferent.
Ethan put his iPad face down on the table. "They use twin variable-pitch propellers, Daniel. Would you like to come to the docks on Saturday and see one up close?"
Daniel’s head snapped up, his small face lighting up with unadulterated joy. "Really?! The big red one?!"
"The big red one," Ethan confirmed, a rare, genuine smile spreading across his face.
Diana looked up from her toast. "Can I come too? I want to see the captain's office!"
"Me too!" David cheered.
Naomi stood by the kitchen door, watching the family laugh together for the first time in memory. She caught Ethan’s eye across the table. He gave her a long, lingering look filled with profound gratitude—and something deeper, something warm and dangerous that made Naomi's heart skip a beat.
However, tranquility in the Carter house was a delicate thing.
While Ethan and the children drew closer to Naomi, external forces were brewing a storm. Beatrice Adeleke had not accepted her humiliation quietly. Furious at being cast aside for a common nanny, she allied herself with Chief Chief Richard Cole—Ethan’s primary corporate rival in the West African energy sector.
Cole had been trying to launch a hostile takeover of Carter Energy for eighteen months. He knew Ethan’s Achilles' heel was his family reputation and his emotional stability.
In a secluded VIP lounge at the Ikoyi Club, Beatrice sat across from Richard Cole, sipping gin and tonic.
"The widow has Ethan wrapped around her finger," Beatrice spat, her eyes venomous. "He paid off her daughter's medical bills. He lets her manage the household. If this continues, she will be the new Mrs. Carter within a year, and my sister’s legacy—and my family's access to the Carter fortune—will be completely erased!"
Richard Cole swirled his drink, a predatory smile spreading across his face. "Ethan Carter has always been driven by an unbearable sense of nobility. He thinks he’s a savior. But tell me, Beatrice... what happens if this nanny turns out to be a security threat?"
"What do you mean?" Beatrice asked, leaning in.
Cole pulled a flash drive from his coat pocket. "Ethan’s firm is bidding on the ten-billion-dollar Deepwater Atlantic License next week. The technical specifications are stored on a encrypted server in his private home study. If those files leak to the press or to my firm, Ethan will face a federal investigation for corporate negligence and treasonous insider trading."
Beatrice’s eyes widened. "You want to plant a leak and blame it on the nanny?"
May you like
"She has full access to the house," Cole said smoothly. "She has massive financial debts—a perfect motive. We plant the evidence in her personal belongings, release the specs to the media, and frame her. Ethan will feel betrayed, he will destroy her in court, and in his emotional distraction, my firm will sweep in and steal the Deepwater license right from under him."
Beatrice smiled, a dark, wicked sound escaping her throat. "And I will be there to pick up the pieces of his broken heart once he throws her in prison."
