Chapter 7 - THE ACCUSATION

The study descended into utter chaos.
"That is impossible!" Naomi shouted, stepping forward, her hands shaking violently. "I don't even own a tablet! The only device I have is an old button phone!"
Inspector Okon signaled to two of his officers. "Search her quarters."
"Inspector, wait!" Ethan demanded, his voice ringing like a iron bell. "Naomi has been with me in this study for the past ten minutes! She couldn't have executed a file transfer while standing right here!"
"Remote execution scripts can be set on timers, Mr. Carter," Inspector Okon replied coldly. "We must follow standard procedure."
Ten minutes later, an officer returned carrying a sleek, silver tablet device and a thick manila envelope sealed with red wax.
"We found these hidden beneath the mattress in Mrs. Johnson's quarters," the officer reported, laying the items on Ethan’s desk.
The officer tapped the tablet screen. It lit up, displaying an active file transmission log showing the complete technical schematics of the Deepwater Atlantic License being uploaded to an offshore server registered in the Cayman Islands. Inside the manila envelope was five hundred thousand Naira in crisp, uncirculated notes and a handwritten letter addressed to Chief Richard Cole’s administrative assistant.
Naomi stared at the desk, her face draining of all color. "No... no, no, no! This is a setup! Someone put those in my room! I swear to God Almighty, I have never seen that tablet in my life!"
Beatrice stepped into the study from the hallway, a look of profound, theatrical sorrow painted across her face.
"Oh, Ethan!" Beatrice gasped, putting a hand to her chest. "I warned you! I told you she was desperate! She used her child's illness to win your sympathy, and all the while she was working for Richard Cole to ruin you!"
"Shut up, Beatrice!" Ethan roared, his eyes wild with a mixture of betrayal, confusion, and raw fury.
He turned to Naomi. He looked into her eyes, searching for any sign of deceit, any flicker of guilt. But all he saw was absolute terror and devastated innocence.
Yet, the physical evidence laying on his desk was overwhelming. The security logs, the money, the tablet, the secret transfer—it was an ironclad case of corporate espionage.
"Naomi..." Ethan said, his voice cracking slightly, the warmth from minutes ago completely destroyed. "Tell me you didn't do this."
"Ethan, look at me!" Naomi wept, stepping toward him, her hands outstretched in desperation. "Look at my eyes! I love your children! I respect you! You saved my daughter’s life—why would I ever hurt you?! I am being framed!"
"The evidence is clear, Mr. Carter," Inspector Okon stated, stepping between Ethan and Naomi. He pulled out a pair of steel handcuffs. "Mrs. Naomi Johnson, you are under arrest for corporate espionage, illegal data extraction, and grand conspiracy."
"No! Please!" Naomi cried out as the cold metal locked around her wrists. "Tomorrow morning is my daughter’s surgery! Please! She needs me! If I am not at the hospital, they cannot proceed! Please!"
"Inspector," Ethan interjected, his voice shaking with intense emotional strain. "Hold her at the station, but do not process the formal charges until I complete my internal investigation. And allow her to speak with her child's doctor."
"Standard booking procedures apply, Mr. Carter," Okon said strictly. "She comes with us now."
As the police officers escorted Naomi out of the study, her tear-stained face turned back toward Ethan. "Ethan! Don't let them do this! Find the truth! Please!"
Ethan stood frozen in the center of the study, his heart torn into a million jagged pieces. The room smelled of her soft perfume, yet the desk held the evidence of his ruin.
Down the hall, the bedroom doors opened slowly.
Diana, Daniel, and David stood in their pajamas, watching in horror as their beloved nanny was led down the marble staircase in handcuffs by armed policemen.
"Naomi!" Diana screamed, running to the balcony railing. "Daddy! What are they doing to Naomi?!"
Daniel burst into tears, throwing himself against his father’s legs as Ethan walked out into the corridor. "Daddy! Don't let them take her! She didn't do anything wrong! Don't let her leave like the others!"
Ethan knelt down, pulling his three weeping children into his arms. As he held them, feeling their small bodies tremble with heartbreak, a cold, crystalline realization struck him through the fog of shock.
Naomi hadn't broken. She hadn't run from his children's chaos. She had put herself in front of a fire for David. A woman who cared that deeply for his children would never sell them out for a stack of cash.
Ethan looked up at Beatrice, who was standing at the end of the hall, a subtle, satisfied smirk lingering on her lips.

Ethan’s gray eyes turned to ice.
"She didn't do this," Ethan whispered to himself, his voice hardening into steel. "And I am going to tear this city apart until I find out who did."
