Chapter 9 - THE SURGERY AND THE VOW

The heavy iron door of the police cell unlocked with a sharp metallic clang.

Inspector Okon stepped into the doorway, looking profoundly embarrassed, holding Naomi’s personal handbag and worn nylon purse.

"Mrs. Johnson," Okon said, clearing his throat nervously. "You are completely cleared of all charges. The true perpetrator, Chief Mrs. Beatrice Adeleke, has been taken into custody. You are free to go."

Naomi stood up, her heart pounding against her ribs. She didn't waste time asking questions or demanding apologies. She looked at the station clock on the wall.

7:15 AM.

"My daughter!" Naomi gasped, grabbing her bag and sprinting out of the station doors into the bright morning sunlight.

Standing right outside the precinct entrance was a fleet of three black SUV luxury vehicles, their engines idling.

Standing beside the lead car, wearing a dark suit with his tie perfectly done, was Ethan Carter. Sitting in the back seat, waving frantically through the lowered window, were Daniel, David, and Diana.

"Naomi!" the triplets cheered together.

Naomi stopped on the concrete steps, tears breaking from her eyes as she looked at Ethan.

Ethan walked up the steps toward her. Without saying a word, he pulled out a pristine linen handkerchief and gently wiped the tears from her face, just as she had done for his daughter weeks ago.

"I am so sorry I ever let them put those cuffs on you," Ethan said, his voice filled with deep, undeniable emotion. "I promised I would protect you. Get in the car. We have fifteen minutes to reach Saint Nicholas Hospital."

Naomi nodded, her voice choking up. "Thank you... thank you, Ethan."

The motorcade tore through the streets of Lagos with police escorts clearing the heavy morning traffic, sirens blaring through the commercial district.

At 7:42 AM, the doors to the pediatric surgical wing of Saint Nicholas Hospital burst open.

Dr. Kalu was standing near the nurse’s station, holding a clipboard, looking anxiously at his watch. "Mrs. Johnson! Thank God! We were five minutes away from canceling the operating theater!"

Naomi rushed forward, taking the pen from Dr. Kalu's hand, signing her signature across the surgical consent forms with a shaking hand. "Please... save my baby."

"We will do everything humanly possible, Mrs. Johnson," Dr. Kalu assured her, taking the clipboard and nodding to the surgical team.

Moments later, a small mobile bed was wheeled out of the prep room. Six-year-old Deborah lay on the white sheets, wearing a tiny hospital gown, looking tiny and fragile against the medical equipment.

Naomi ran to the side of the bed, holding her daughter’s face. "Deborah, my darling! Mummy is here! Mummy is right here!"

Deborah opened her sleepy eyes, offering a weak smile. "Mummy... I wasn't scared. I knew you would come."

Ethan stepped up beside Naomi, placing his hand over Naomi’s on the side of the bed. He looked down at the little girl gently. "You're a very brave girl, Deborah. When you wake up, you're coming to a big house with a huge garden, okay?"

Deborah looked at Ethan, then at Naomi, giving a faint nod before the anesthesiologist guided the bed through the double doors of the operating theater.

The heavy red light above the door illuminated: SURGERY IN PROGRESS.

The next five hours were an agonizing endurance test of silence and prayer.

Naomi sat in the private waiting lounge, her eyes glued to the red light. She didn't sit alone.

The triplets sat on either side of her. Diana held Naomi’s right hand, rubbing her knuckles softly. Daniel and David took turns bringing her paper cups of warm water. And Ethan sat directly across from her, his presence an unshakable pillar of strength, refusing to leave her side for a single second despite dozens of urgent calls coming into his phone regarding the collapse of Richard Cole's firm following the police exposure.

At 1:15 PM, the surgical light finally switched off.

Dr. Kalu stepped out into the waiting room, removing his surgical mask, his brow slick with sweat.

Naomi stood up so fast her chair slid back. Ethan stepped right behind her, placing a supportive hand on the small of her back.

"Dr. Kalu?" Naomi gasped, her voice barely a whisper.

Dr. Kalu looked at Naomi, and then a wide, triumphant smile broke across his exhausted face.

"The ventricular defect has been completely repaired, Mrs. Johnson," Dr. Kalu announced proudly. "Her blood pressure is stable, her heart rhythm is strong, and the operation was an absolute success. Deborah is going to live a long, healthy life."

Naomi let out a gasping sob of pure, unadulterated joy. Her legs finally gave out from under her, but Ethan caught her before she could touch the floor, lifting her into his arms and holding her tight against his chest.

Naomi buried her face in Ethan's neck, weeping tears of profound relief. Ethan held her fiercely, closing his eyes, burying his face in her hair, whispering comforting words against her skin.

Around them, the triplets cheered, jumping up and down, hugging Dr. Kalu and each other in a chaotic burst of pure happiness.

For the first time in years, the dark clouds that had hung over both the Johnson and Carter families were completely swept away by the light.
