Chapter 8 - THE RACE AGAINST TIME

It was 3:00 AM.
Naomi sat on a cold wooden bench inside a holding cell at the Victoria Island Police Division. Her wrists were red from the handcuffs, her eyes swollen from continuous weeping.
Every tick of the wall clock felt like a knife twisting in her heart.
8:00 AM. In five short hours, six-year-old Deborah would be wheeled into the operating theater at Saint Nicholas Hospital. Under medical protocol, the primary guardian had to sign the final consent form in person thirty minutes prior to surgery. If Naomi was locked in a jail cell, the surgeons would be legally forced to cancel the procedure, and Deborah’s weak heart might not survive another week of delay.
"God of the fatherless," Naomi prayed quietly, her hands trembling in her lap. "Protect my child. Do not let my innocence be my destruction."
Meanwhile, back at the Carter estate, the house had turned into an war room.
Ethan had summoned his elite private cybersecurity team, led by Marcus—a former intelligence operative. They were gathered in the study, dissecting every byte of data on the seized tablet and reviewing every frame of the estate's CCTV footage.
The triplets refused to go to sleep. They sat in the corner of the study on a leather sofa, wrapped in blankets, clutching each other, watching their father work.
"Daddy," Diana said, her voice small but steady. "Naomi told us that when people are angry, they make big mistakes. The bad people who hurt Naomi made a mistake too."
Ethan paused, turning to look at his daughter. "What do you mean, Diana?"
"Yesterday afternoon," Diana recalled, squinting her eyes in concentration, "Auntie Beatrice was talking near the garden gazebo with a man in a black suit. She gave him a silver box. I saw it from my bedroom window while I was doing my reading lesson."
Marcus’s fingers instantly froze over his keyboard. "Mr. Carter, look at this."
Ethan rushed to the monitor. Marcus pointed to a line of system code buried deep within the tablet's operating system.
"The file upload script wasn't triggered from this tablet's local interface," Marcus explained, zooming in on the IP routing logs. "It was triggered via a local Bluetooth relay device. Someone had to be within thirty feet of Mrs. Johnson's bedroom with a master transmitter to initiate that transfer and make it look like it came from her device!"
"Where was the transmitter located?" Ethan demanded.
Marcus cross-referenced the signal strength metrics. "The relay signal originated from... Room 204. The secondary guest suite."
Ethan’s blood ran hot. Room 204 was the guest suite occupied by Beatrice Adeleke whenever she stayed overnight.
"Marcus," Ethan growled, his voice vibrating with dangerous rage. "Isolate the digital signature of that transmitter. Can you prove it didn't belong to Naomi?"
"I can do better than that," Marcus smiled grimly. "The transmitter's serial number is registered to a security device purchased three days ago under a corporate credit card owned by Adeleke Logistics—Beatrice’s family firm."
Ethan didn't say another word. He turned to his head of security, Mr. Mensah. "Bring Beatrice to the study. Now."
Three minutes later, Beatrice was dragged into the study by two security guards, wearing a silk robe, her face contorted in outrage.
"Ethan! What is the meaning of this barbarism?!" Beatrice shrieked. "Your guards put their hands on me!"
Ethan walked up to her, his posture towering, his face radiating an terrifying aura of absolute judgment. He held up the printed forensic report.
"Adeleke Logistics, serial number 440-B," Ethan read aloud, his voice low and deadly. "You bought the Bluetooth transmitter that planted the stolen files on Naomi’s tablet. You paid off a fake technician to enter the estate. You tried to ruin an innocent woman and destroy my company."
Beatrice’s breath hitched. She looked at the laptop screen, then at the hard forensic evidence laying on the desk. The color drained from her face, leaving her looking hollow and pathetic.
"Ethan... I... I did it for us!" Beatrice stammered, tears of panic brimming in her eyes. "She was taking over! She was making you forget Victoria! She's just a poor nobody, Ethan! She doesn't belong in our world!"
"She has more grace, integrity, and beauty in her little finger than you have in your entire body," Ethan spat, his voice laced with profound disgust. "Victoria would have despised what you’ve become."
He turned to Mr. Mensah. "Call Inspector Okon. Tell him we have the real perpetrator. And tell him if Naomi Johnson is not released within twenty minutes, I will buy his entire police precinct and fire everyone in it by noon."
Ethan grabbed his suit jacket, turning to his children. "Children, get your coats."
Diana sat up straight. "Where are we going, Daddy?"
May you like
Ethan looked at his watch. It was 6:45 AM.
"We are going to get our governess," Ethan said firmly. "And then we are going to save her daughter."
