Chapter 10 - The Full Circle

Two years later.
The morning sun reflected off the surface of the lake as I walked along the path, holding Maya’s small, warm hand in mine. She was three now, a whirlwind of endless curiosity, bright laughter, and dark curls that tumbled over her shoulders.
"Look, Mama! A duck!" she squealed, pointing a tiny finger toward the water.
"I see it, baby," I smiled, leaning down to scoop her up into my arms. She rested her head against my shoulder, safe and completely content.
The Mercer Collection was now one of the top luxury boutique hotel brands in North America, known not just for its elegance, but for its ethical governance, equal-pay initiatives, and employee-first culture. Celeste was our head of global design. Simone was our General Counsel. And I was a mother who never had to choose between my work and my daughter.
As for Dominic, I rarely heard his name anymore. Occasionally, a line in a financial column would mention his attempts to launch a small consultancy firm that never quite gained traction, or his name would pop up in property record filings for modest suburban rentals. He had become what he feared most: irrelevant. Not because I destroyed him, but because without the illusion he manufactured, there was nothing substantial underneath.
My phone chimed in my pocket. A text message from Arthur Vance: Board package for the London acquisition looks bulletproof, Evelyn. See you at the 2 PM strategy call. Give Maya a hug for me.
I tucked the phone back away and kissed Maya’s forehead.
"Mama?" she asked, looking up at me with her bright, clear eyes.
"Yes, my sweet girl?"
"Are we going home now?"
I looked down the path—toward the brownstone filled with light, toward the life I had built with my own hands, my own mind, and my own unyielding strength.
"Yes, Maya," I said, smiling as we stepped forward into the bright morning air. "We're already home."
