Chapter 9 - Clear Horizons

That evening, after the guests had left and the garden was quiet again, I sat on the back porch with Maya asleep in my arms.

The air was warm, carrying the scent of night-blooming jasmine and fresh grass.

I thought back to that night in the hospital room—the damp hair of my forty-minute-old baby, the smell of hospital sanitizer, the white rose on Dominic’s lapel, and the terrifying silence before I pressed the call button.

I had thought that moment was the end of my life. I had thought that being betrayed at my lowest, most vulnerable point would define the story my daughter would inherit.

But sitting here now, feeling the steady, warm rhythm of Maya’s breathing against my chest, I knew the truth.
