Chapter 2 - The Fracture

The Grand Ballroom of the St. Regis was draped in white orchids and crystal chandeliers when Arthur Vance received the envelope.

He didn't open it at the head table. He walked into the private holding room behind the stage, where Dominic was frantically trying to clean a wine stain off his cuff.

"What is this?" Arthur’s voice was low, heavy with the weight of a billionaire who had made his fortune in corporate liquidations.

Dominic turned around, forced a polite smile, and smoothed his lapels. "Arthur. Just a minor administrative hold-up. Evelyn is being difficult about the severance package from our divorce. Nothing that affects our merger."

Arthur didn't smile back. He threw the thick legal packet onto the marble vanity.

"This isn't a divorce dispute, Dominic. This is an injunction freeze signed by Judge Miller. It accuses you of hiding thirty-two million dollars in operational debt inside the secondary holding company—the very holding company my family was set to acquire tonight."

Dominic’s face drained of color. "That’s... that’s a misinterpretation of our accounting structures—"

"My forensic team spent thirty minutes reviewing the attachments while my daughter was fixing her makeup," Arthur cut in, his voice dead. "The analyst who signed off on these structural red flags isn't some outside auditor. It’s Evelyn."

Dominic opened his mouth, but no sound came out.

"You told me she was a quiet socialite who took a settlement and moved to the country," Arthur continued, stepping closer. "You told me she had no insight into Vale Hospitality’s capital framework. Yet every single loophole my lawyers missed, she mapped out with primary bank ledgers and wire confirmation codes."

The door opened, and Celeste stepped in. She had taken off her veil. Her dark hair fell loosely around her shoulders, and her eyes were red-rimmed.

"Dad," she said quietly. "She has a baby."

Arthur frowned. "What?"

"Dominic has a daughter. Born an hour ago at St. Jude’s," Celeste said, her voice trembling with a mixture of rage and profound humiliation. "He left our photo session to force her to sign a gag order. He lied to us, Dad. About the baby, about the debt, about everything."

Arthur looked at Dominic. For three seconds, the room was completely silent except for the faint sound of the string quartet playing in the ballroom outside.

"The merger is off," Arthur said.

"Arthur, please—" Dominic stepped forward, arms raised in supplication. "We can restructure! We can insulate the assets—"

"If you contact my daughter again, or if your name appears near my firm's portfolio, I will personally finance every lawsuit Evelyn files against you," Arthur said cold-bloodedly. He reached out, grabbed Celeste’s arm gently, and walked out the door, leaving Dominic standing alone in his wedding suit amidst the noise of a three-hundred-person party he could no longer afford.
