Chapter 6 - A New Ledger

Six months later.

The spring sunlight streamed through the high windows of the new headquarters of Vance & Mercer Capital, a private restructuring firm founded by Arthur Vance and Marcus Vance.

I sat at the corner desk overlooking the park. Beside me was a custom wooden crib where six-month-old Maya sat playing with a plush rabbit, her bright blue eyes scanning the room with curious intensity.

My phone rang. It was Simone.

"The criminal proceedings just wrapped up in federal court," Simone said. "Dominic pled guilty to two counts of wire fraud and falsifying corporate records. Three years probation, five million in restitution, and a permanent ban from serving as an officer in any publicly traded company."

I looked out the window at the city below. "And the penthouse?"

"Auctions off next week to cover his personal tax liabilities. He’s living in a rented apartment in Jersey City."

"Does he have visitation?"

"He hasn't requested it," Simone said quietly. "His lawyer hinted that he finds it 'too difficult' to visit the city under the circumstances."

"Good," I said, feeling no anger, no sadness, and no regret. "Then she grows up knowing only the people who stayed."

Simone cleared her throat. "By the way, the board of the reorganized Vale Hotels—now renamed The Mercer Collection—just passed the resolution. They’re offering you the Chief Executive seat."

I turned my chair around and picked up my daughter, lifting her into my lap. She giggled, reaching out a tiny, soft hand to grasp my silk lapel.

"Tell them I’ll accept on one condition," I said softly into the phone.

"Name it," Simone replied with a grin in her voice.

"The company headquarters moves to Lincoln Park. And we build a daycare on the first floor."
