Chapter 4 - The Unbreakable Vow

I walked back into Sophie’s room ten minutes later. Clara was right behind me, but I ignored her entirely.
Sophie was lying in her bed, looking exhausted from her earlier emotional outburst. When she saw me walk back in, followed by Clara’s stormy expression, she sat up slightly, panic returning to her eyes.
"Ethan... please don't fight with Clara," Sophie whispered faintly.
I walked straight to the side of her bed, ignoring Clara’s demands for security, ignoring the heart monitor beep, ignoring the cold darkness that had surrounded my life for the past two months.
I dropped to my knees, reached into my coat pocket, and pulled out my ring finger.
I hadn't taken off my wedding band. I had kept it on a silver chain beneath my shirt every single day since the divorce was finalized.
I unhooked the chain, slid the silver band off, and held it in front of her face.
"Ethan... what are you doing?" Sophie breathed, her eyes widening.
"We signed divorce papers two months ago because I was blind, stupid, and cowardly," I said, my voice ringing out with an absolute, unshakeable power that filled the small hospital room. "I believed the lie that you stopped loving me. But today I found out that you loved me so much you were willing to die in the dark just to save me from pain."
"Ethan, stop this nonsense!" Clara barked, reaching for my shoulder.
I turned my head and gave Clara a look so dark, so terrifying, that her hand froze mid-air. "Touch me again, Clara, and I will have you removed from this hospital by police for medical negligence."
I turned back to Sophie, taking her icy left hand in mine.
"I am not letting you go to hospice, Sophie," I said, tears streaming down my cheeks, but my voice firm as iron. "I don't care if I have to sell my apartment, sell my car, take out ten loans, or work twenty hours a day for the rest of my life. I am going to pay for your surgery. I am going to stand right beside this bed every single second until you get a new heart."
"Ethan..." Sophie sobbed, shaking her head. "It's too much money... you'll ruin your life..."
"My life was already ruined the day I walked out of our home!" I yelled softly, pressing her hand against my cheek. "You are my life, Sophie! There is no life for me without you! So listen to me right now: You are going to fight. You are going to stay awake, you are going to swallow your medicine, and you are going to fight for us!"
Sophie stared at me, her chest heaving as tears washed away the pale, hopeless mask she had worn for months. The quiet, resigned woman who was ready to surrender to death suddenly vanished, replaced by the woman who had loved me fiercely for five years.
"Okay..." she choked out, her fingers wrapping tight around my hand, squeezing with everything she had left. "Okay, Ethan... I'll fight. I'll fight."
Clara sneered from the doorway. "You're both insane. You can't raise six hundred thousand dollars in three weeks, Ethan. It's impossible."

I stood up, turning to face Clara.
"Watch me," I said flatly.
