Chapter 5 - The War for Every Dollar

The next fourteen days were a blur of absolute, desperate madness.
I didn't sleep more than two hours a night.
I moved out of my Chicago apartment overnight, forfeiting my deposit, and moved into a cheap cot in the hospital's family waiting room so every single penny of my savings could go toward Sophie’s medical deposit.
I sold my car. I sold my watch, my electronics, my furniture.
I took out a maximum personal loan against my 401(k), raising $110,000.
I took the medical records to Caleb, my best friend whom I had come to visit at the hospital that fateful day. Caleb was a senior software developer at a major tech firm. When he read Sophie’s diagnosis and heard what she had done for me, he wept openly in his hospital bed.
Within twenty-four hours, Caleb set up a verified public medical campaign titled: “A Sacrifice for Love: Save Sophie’s Heart.”
He reached out to his tech network, local news outlets, and community blogs.
I spent every evening after my accounting shifts sitting beside Sophie’s bed, holding her hand while laptop screens buzzed with updates.
By day seven, the campaign had raised $180,000.
By day ten, local news picked up the story of the husband who discovered his ex-wife’s hidden illness two months after their divorce. The story went viral across the Midwest. Donations poured in from strangers, nurses, former college classmates, and anonymous donors.
Total raised: $490,000.
We were only $110,000 short of the required deposit for the emergency LVAD bridge surgery and transplant list placement.
On day twelve, Clara struck back.
I walked into the hospital lobby at 8:00 AM to find two lawyers in expensive grey suits standing beside Clara and Sophie’s elderly mother, Evelyn, who suffered from mild dementia and had been manipulated entirely by Clara.
"Ethan Vance," the lead lawyer said coldly, handing me a court summons. "We have filed an emergency injunction on behalf of Evelyn Vance, legal guardian of Sophie’s family estate. We are contesting your right to make medical decisions for Sophie, and freezing the public campaign funds under suspicion of fraud."
My blood ran cold. "Fraud?! Every single dollar is linked directly to St. Vincent Hospital’s billing account!"
"You are an ex-husband," Clara said coldly, stepping forward with a malicious smile. "You have no legal standing. The court hearing is set for tomorrow morning. Until then, Dr. Thorne cannot proceed with the LVAD procedure."
I looked at the legal papers, my hands trembling with rage.
"Sophie’s ejection fraction dropped to 18% last night, Clara!" I shouted, the lobby quiet setting on edge. "She doesn't have time for a court hearing! If she doesn't get the LVAD pump this week, her organs will start failing!"

"Then I guess she should have accepted hospice like I told her," Clara whispered coldly, leaning in so only I could hear. "You think you can come back and play the hero? You embarrassed me, Ethan. You made me look like the bad sister on national news. I will crush you in court."
She turned on her high heels and walked away, leaving me standing alone in the bright, sterile lobby with a injunction paper in my hands.
