Chapter 9 - The Midnight Call

On the night of November 14th, a heavy snowstorm blanketed Chicago in six inches of white powder.

It was 2:15 AM.

I was fast asleep on the small pull-out sofa beside Sophie’s bed, holding her hand across the mattress gap.

Suddenly, the bedside landline phone rang loudly, shattering the quiet room.

I sat up instantly, my heart slamming against my ribs. Sophie woke up too, her eyes wide with sudden adrenaline.

I grabbed the receiver. "Hello?!"

"Ethan, it's Dr. Thorne," a crisp, urgent voice spoke through the speaker. "Get Sophie prepped. We just received confirmation from the UNOS registry. A compatible donor heart from a young donor in Wisconsin just arrived at O'Hare airport via medical transport helicopter."

My phone nearly dropped from my hand. "A match...?"

"A perfect match," Dr. Thorne said, his voice trembling with rare emotion. "Panel reactive antibody test is zero. Blood type O positive. Size matches her chest cavity precisely. Operating Room 3 is being prepped right now. We go in two hours."

I hung up the phone and looked at Sophie.

She was sitting up in bed, her hands pressed against her mouth, tears brimming in her dark eyes.

"Is it...?" she whispered.

"It's time, Soph," I wept, throwing my arms around her. "It's time!"

The next two hours were an absolute whirlwind of medical efficiency.

Nurses rushed in to wash her skin with antiseptic soap, anesthesiologists arrived to verify her vitals, and Caleb arrived at 3:30 AM through the snowstorm, bringing a small bouquet of white roses.

At 4:15 AM, Dr. Thorne walked into the room wearing full surgical scrubs.

"Ready to give up your mechanical battery pack, Sophie?" he asked with a warm smile.

Sophie looked down at the LVAD controller that had kept her alive for six months, then turned her head to look at me.

"I'm ready," she said clearly.

I walked beside her gurney all the way to the doors of Operating Room 3. This time, I wasn't terrified. This time, I knew the strength that lived inside her small body.

As they prepared to push her inside, she pulled my hand down to her lips, pressing a long, warm kiss against my knuckles.

May you like

"Wait for me in our new home, Ethan," she whispered softly.

"I'll be right here when you wake up," I promised, pressing my forehead against hers. "I love you."
