Chapter 4 - A Fragile Bridge

By 5:15 AM, the floor was silent again.
Santo had cleared the stairwell with ruthless efficiency. The four mercenaries sent by Gianna Falcone were quietly removed through the service elevators, leaving no trace of the brief, deadly struggle that had occurred while the rest of the hospital slept.
In the center of Room 204, the heavy double doors opened, and two of Nico’s men carried in a thermal refrigeration box bearing the seal of the New Haven Research Institute.
Dr. Vance rushed inside, his face pale but determined. "Is that the V-90 inhibitor?"
"It is," Nico said, leaning against the wall, his coat removed to reveal his shoulder holster. "Administer it."
The medical team worked with rapid precision. The clear liquid was drawn into an intravenous bag and hooked into Milo’s line. For thirty agonizing minutes, Claire, Nico, and Dr. Vance stood around the bed in total silence, watching the monitor.
Slowly, almost magically, the red line indicating Milo’s body temperature began to drop. The harsh, rapid rise of his heart rate stabilized into a steady, healthy rhythm. The deep flush on his cheeks faded into a soft, natural pink.
Dr. Vance let out a long, exhausted breath. "The inhibitor is working. The autoimmune storm is breaking. He’s going to make it."
Claire collapsed into a chair beside the bed, burying her face in her hands as silent, overwhelming tears of relief washed over her.
Nico stood motionless by the foot of the bed. His eyes closed for five full seconds, his chest rising and falling as if he had been holding his breath for two straight years.
"Mmm... Mommy?" a tiny, raspy voice whispered from the pillows.
Claire’s head snapped up instantly.
Milo was blinking open his large, dark eyes, looking around the room with sleep-heavy curiosity. His small fingers twitched against the bedsheet.
"I'm here, baby! Mommy's right here!" Claire cried, leaning over to kiss his forehead, her tears dripping onto his blanket.
Milo looked at her, offering a faint, tired smile. "My throat feels scratchy."
"I know, sweetheart. Drink a little water," Claire said, holding a straw to his lips.
After taking three small sips, Milo’s eyes wandered past his mother, settling on the massive man standing silently at the foot of his bed. The boy stared at Nico’s broad shoulders, his dark suit, and the intense, gentle gaze locking onto him.
"Who's that mister?" Milo asked innocently, his small hand reaching out toward Nico. "Is he a police officer?"
Claire froze, her heart hammering against her ribs. She looked at Nico, seeing a rare, genuine panic flicker across the mob boss’s face. The man who faced down armed assassins without flinching was terrified of a three-year-old boy's question.
Claire took a deep breath, reaching out to take Nico’s hand and pulling him closer to the bed.
"No, sweetie," Claire said, her voice shaking with quiet emotion. "He's not a police officer. This is... this is your daddy."
Milo’s dark eyes widened slightly. He looked at Nico’s face, then at his own small hand, noticing the exact same shape of the fingers.
"Daddy?" Milo whispered. "You came?"
May you like
Nico sank to his knees beside the bed, his knees hitting the cold floor with a heavy thud. He took Milo’s tiny hand into his massive palm, his voice cracking with an emotion he hadn't shown in a decade.
"I came, Milo," Nico promised, pressing his forehead against his son’s small hand. "And I am never going away again."
