Chapter 7 - Blood Money and Medicine

The peace at Villa Solaria was short-lived.
At 3:00 AM the following morning, a silent alarm tripped along the south perimeter of the estate.
Nico was awake instantly, slipping out of the grand bed where Claire lay sleeping, dressing in dark tactical clothes in less than twenty seconds.
He met Santo in the subterranean security war room below the garage.
"What is it?" Nico asked, staring at the bank of glowing monitors.
"A single vehicle crossed the outer gate three minutes ago," Santo reported, pulling up thermal camera feeds. "No weapons detected. It’s Marcus."
Nico’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice. "He came here alone?"
"He claims he wants to surrender," Santo said, handing Nico a wireless earpiece. "He says Gianna discovered he was double-crossing him and tried to execute him an hour ago. He’s begging for protection in exchange for Gianna’s primary offshore ledger."
Nico walked up the stone steps leading to the main courtyard, flanked by Santo and four armed enforcers.
Standing in the snow beneath the courtyard floodlights was Marcus. His expensive coat was torn, his face bruised, and he clutched a small, blood-stained metal briefcase to his chest, shivering violently in the freezing mountain air.
"Nico! Please!" Marcus cried out, dropping to his knees in the snow as Nico approached. "I made a mistake! Gianna threatened my family! He forced me to leak the hospital codes!"
Nico stood over the kneeling man, his hands resting casually in his coat pockets, looking down at him with utter disdain.
"You put my son’s life on the line, Marcus," Nico said, his voice dropping into a register of iron death. "There is no protection for that."
"I have the ledger!" Marcus whimpered, holding up the briefcase. "It contains every bank account, every corrupt politician, and every shipping route Gianna uses! Without this, Gianna’s entire faction collapses tomorrow!"
Claire stepped out onto the stone veranda, wrapped in a heavy wool coat, watching the scene from above.
Marcus looked up, spotting Claire. "Mrs. Falcone! Please! Speak for me! I saved your life two years ago by delaying Gianna’s hit squad!"
Claire walked down the stone steps, her boots crunching softly in the snow, standing beside Nico. She looked down at the man who had traded her son's safety for syndicate gold.
"You didn't save my life, Marcus," Claire said coldly. "You waited until the highest bidder made an offer. Nico..." She turned to her husband. "Take the ledger. But do not stain our son's sanctuary with his blood."
Nico looked at Claire, seeing her wisdom and grace. He gave a single, sharp nod to Santo.
"Take him to the federal authorities in the city," Nico commanded. "Give them the ledger and Marcus’s signed confession. Let the government dismantle Gianna’s financial network before sunrise."

Marcus gasped in relief, sobbing as Santo dragged him up from the snow. "Thank you... thank you..."
"Don't thank me," Nico called out as Marcus was led away. "The state penitentiary is the only place Gianna’s assassins can't reach you tonight."
