Chapter 6 - The Safehouse in the Pines

By noon, Dr. Vance officially cleared Milo for transfer to a private medical transport.

To ensure absolute safety, Nico moved Claire and Milo away from the city to Villa Solaria—a heavily fortified private estate nestled deep in the pine forests of the Berkshire Mountains, two hours north of the city. Surrounded by twelve-foot stone walls, smart surveillance systems, and a team of forty elite guards, the villa was an impenetrable fortress.

The main house was breathtaking: warm timber beams, tall stone fireplaces, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a frozen mountain lake.

Milo was settled into a luxurious master suite on the second floor, sound asleep under a soft wool duvet, guarded by two senior nurses and Santo’s best men.

Downstairs in the grand living room, a roaring fire crackled softly in the hearth, casting amber light across the leather sofas and stone floor.

Claire stood by the mantle, holding a glass of dark red wine, watching the snow fall gently over the pine trees outside. She had changed into a warm beige cashmere sweater and leggings provided by the estate staff.

Heavy footsteps echoed across the hardwood floor. Nico stepped into the room, his jacket removed, his dark shirt unbuttoned at the collar, revealing the silver chain resting against his chest.

"Milo is sleeping soundly," Nico said, walking up beside her. "The doctor says he can return to normal activities in three days."

"Thank you, Nico," Claire said quietly, looking up at him through her lashes. "For everything you did today."

"You don't need to thank me for protecting my blood," Nico replied softly. He reached out, his thumb gently tracing the curve of her jawline. "I should be asking for your forgiveness. For the two years I stole from you. For making you raise our son alone in a walk-up above a bakery."

Claire looked into his dark gray eyes, feeling the warmth of his touch spreading through her skin like wildfire. The anger, the pain, the loneliness of twenty-four months seemed to melt away in the heat of the hearth.

"I hated you, Nico," she admitted softly, her voice barely a whisper. "Every night I cried myself to sleep in that tiny apartment, I swore I would never let you touch me again."

"And now?" Nico asked, his hand sliding into her hair, gently tilting her head back.

"Now... I realize how much energy I wasted pretending I didn't love you," she confessed, her breath catching in her throat.

May you like

Nico lowered his head, his lips touching hers in a deep, desperate kiss that shattered the last remaining walls between them. It was a kiss born of survival, of relief, of a fierce, possessive love that had refused to die despite two years of cold silence.

Claire wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer, melting against his powerful frame as the snow fell silently outside the window.
