Chapter 10 - The Light in the Window

Four years later, the Maine summer was warm and bright, casting a brilliant gold glow over the ocean.

Clara, now a lively, dark-eyed four-year-old with her father’s curly hair and her mother’s bright smile, was running along the grassy lawn of the lighthouse, chasing a golden retriever puppy. Her happy laughter rang out through the salty air, a beautiful, musical sound that filled the entire estate.

Everly stood on the porch, wearing a simple, flowing blue sundress. She was thirty-one now, her face radiant with health and happiness, her body relaxed and free of the old, tense habits of her past.

She watched her daughter play, her heart swelling with a deep, absolute contentment.

Valerio walked out of the house, holding two cups of fresh lemonade. He wore a pair of comfortable linen trousers and a white button-down shirt, looking every bit the country gentleman, completely detached from the dark empire he had once ruled.

He handed Everly her drink, his fingers lingering on hers with a warm, comforting pressure.

"She’s getting fast," Valerio laughed, watching Clara tumble into the grass with the puppy.

"She has your determination," Everly smiled, leaning her head against his broad shoulder. "And your stubbornness."

"I hope she only inherits the good parts," Valerio said, his voice dropping to a soft, emotional register. He looked down at Everly, his gray eyes filled with a love that had only grown deeper and more profound with every passing year. "And I hope she grows up to be exactly like her mother."

Everly looked at the gold wedding band on her finger, then up at his handsome face. The silver scar on his temple was still there, but it was no longer a symbol of violence. It was a badge of honor, a reminder of the day he had broken through a shattered door to save her.

"We did it, Valerio," she whispered, her eyes shining with happy tears. "We built a home."

Valerio wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her close as the sun began to set over the ocean, painting the sky in brilliant shades of pink, gold, and lavender.

The lighthouse lamp flared to life, casting a bright, guiding beam of light across the dark waters, a symbol of the safety, the love, and the endless peace they had finally found.

"Yes, we did, my love," Valerio said, kissing her soft hair. "And the light will never go out."
