Chapter 2 - The Velvet Fortress

The ride to the Falcone estate was silent, but it was a silence completely different from the suffocating terror Everly was used to.

She sat in the backseat of a plush, armored black town car. The windows were heavily tinted, blocking out the neon glare of the Atlantic City boardwalk. Beside her, Valerio sat with his hands resting on his knees, his eyes fixed on the rain-slicked road ahead. He didn't ask her questions. He didn't demand explanations. He simply allowed her to breathe.

She clutched his silk handkerchief to her cheek, the fabric smelling of expensive cedarwood and clean rain. The bleeding had stopped, but her face felt swollen and tender, a physical map of Wade’s final fury.

They turned off the main highway, entering a secluded, heavily wooded area of Margate. The car stopped before a massive, wrought-iron gate bearing the Falcone family crest—a falcon perched upon a stone tower. The gates opened silently, allowing the vehicle to glide up a long, winding driveway lined with ancient oak trees.

At the end of the driveway stood the Falcone estate. It was a beautiful, historic stone mansion, looking more like an old European castle than a mafia stronghold. Yet, the subtle security measures—the high-definition cameras, the discreetly placed guards in dark suits, the bulletproof glass—reminded Everly exactly who her protector was.

The car stopped. Valerio got out and opened her door himself, refusing to let his driver do it.

"Welcome to your new home, Everly," he said, using her first name for the first time.

She stepped out of the car, her legs still trembling slightly. She looked up at the massive house. "Mr. Falcone... I don't have any money. I can't pay you for this. And if Wade—"

"Wade Mercer will never set foot in this county again," Valerio said, his voice firm and absolute. "And you do not owe me anything. You are a guest in my house. My mother used to say that a home is only as good as the safety it provides to those inside it. For too long, you have lived without safety. That ends tonight."

He led her inside. The interior of the mansion was breathtaking—warm hardwood floors, towering ceilings, and walls adorned with classic Italian paintings. But there was nothing cold or sterile about it. A fire crackled in the massive stone fireplace of the living room, throwing a warm, gold glow over the plush leather sofas.

An elderly woman with gray hair pulled back in a neat bun stepped into the foyer. She wore a clean, white apron over a dark dress and possessed a face lined with kindness.

"This is Maria," Valerio said. "She has been with my family since I was a boy. She will help you settle in."

Maria looked at Everly’s bruised face and swollen cheek. A look of profound, motherly sorrow passed over her features. She walked over to Everly, her movements slow and non-threatening, and gently took her hands.

"Oh, you poor child," Maria whispered, her voice warm and laced with a thick Italian accent. "Come. Let’s get you into a warm bath. I have prepared the guest suite on the second floor. I have clean clothes, warm soup, and a soft bed waiting for you."

Everly looked at Valerio. He gave her a small, reassuring nod.

"Get some rest, Everly," he said. "We will talk tomorrow when you are ready."

As Maria led her up the grand staircase, Everly looked back down at the foyer. Valerio was standing there, watching her go, his hands in his pockets. The light from the chandelier caught the scar on his temple, making him look like a warrior who had finally returned from a long, exhausting war.

For the first time in two years, Everly slept in a bed that didn't smell of Wade’s stale beer. For the first time in two years, she didn't jump at the sound of the wind rattling the window panes.

She lay in the soft, lavender-scented sheets of the guest suite, her hand resting over her stomach.

"We’re safe," she whispered into the dark room. "We’re finally safe."
