Chapter 5 - The Danger in the Dark

The summer turned to autumn, the warm breezes of the boardwalk replaced by the cool, crisp winds of October.

Everly’s pregnancy was progressing beautifully. Her baby bump was now a clear, round curve beneath her soft sweaters, and her face had regained its natural, healthy glow. The bruise on her cheek had faded into a faint, silver scar, a matching counterpart to the one on Valerio’s temple.

Her relationship with Valerio had grown into something deep, quiet, and intensely intimate.

They spent their evenings in the library, sitting by the fireplace, talking about their pasts, their hopes, and the world they wanted to build. Valerio was a man of few words, but when he spoke to Everly, he opened up in a way he had never done with anyone else. He told her about his mother, his lonely childhood, and the crushing weight of ruling an empire built on blood.

And Everly told him about her grandmother, her dreams of becoming a teacher, and the terrifying night she realized Wade was a monster.

"You are going to be a wonderful mother, Everly," Valerio said one evening, his hand resting on the arm of her chair, only inches from her own.

"I'm scared," she admitted, looking into the crackling fire. "Scared that I’ll bring this child into a world where they’ll always have to run. Where they’ll always be looked at as a 'mistake' from a broken home."

Valerio reached out, his warm, rough hand gently covering hers. "This child will never run, Everly. They will have my name. They will have my protection. And they will have a mother who is the bravest woman I have ever met."

Everly looked at him, her heart swelling with a warmth so intense it took her breath away. She leaned in, her forehead resting against his shoulder. Valerio wrapped his arm around her, holding her close, his chin resting on her soft hair.

But their peace was shattered later that night.

At 3:00 AM, the silent alarms of the estate flared to life.

Valerio was out of bed instantly. He pulled a black semi-automatic pistol from his nightstand, his instincts turning to ice. He ran down the hallway to Everly’s room, throwing the door open.

She was already awake, sitting up in bed, her eyes wide with terror.

"Valerio? What’s happening?"

"Stay here," he ordered, pulling her out of bed and guiding her toward the hidden panic room behind the master closet. "We have intruders on the southern perimeter. Lucchese soldiers. They bypassed the main gate."

"No... please, don't leave me," she sobbed, clinging to his shirt.

Valerio cupped her face in his hands, his gray eyes locking onto hers with a fierce, absolute intensity. "I will never leave you, Everly. But I must end this. Lock the door behind me. Do not open it for anyone but me."

He kissed her forehead, a quick, desperate press of his lips, before pushing her into the panic room and sealing the heavy steel door.

Everly sat in the dark, her hands clutching her stomach, the muffled sound of gunfire echoing through the walls of the beautiful stone mansion.
