Chapter 10 - The Promise Kept

Three years later.
A warm, golden autumn afternoon bathed the lakeside garden of the Moretti estate in brilliant sunshine.
The expansive green lawn was dotted with white linen tables, colorful balloons, and small wooden toys. Music from a classical string quartet played softly in the background as Mrs. Doyle, Frank, Grant Hale, and Dr. Sarah Chen sat near the terrace, sipping wine and laughing.
In the center of the lawn, three-year-old Mateo was running frantically through the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy, his joyful, high-pitched laughter echoing across the lake. He wore a little navy blue sweater and corduroy pants, his dark curls bouncing with every step.
"Mateo! Don't run too fast near the fountain!" Emma called out from the terrace, holding a glass of iced tea.
She wore a soft lavender summer dress that fluttered in the gentle lake breeze. Her face was serene, radiant, and completely free of the anxiety that had once defined her life.
From behind her, two strong, warm arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her back against a broad, solid chest.
Vincent rested his chin on her head, holding her close as they both watched their son play in the sun.
"He has your energy," Vincent murmured in her ear, his voice soft, warm, and deeply contented. "He hasn't stopped running since 7:00 AM."
"He has your determination," Emma retorted gently, turning her head to kiss his cheek. "And your stubbornness."
Vincent chuckled softly, turning her around in his arms so she faced him. He looked down at her face, his thumb gently tracing her jawline—the same gesture he had made in the dark study three years ago, but now filled with a light that had forever banished the shadows of their past.
"Three years ago today," Vincent said softly, "you sat across from me in a conference room on the forty-first floor, refusing to lie for me."
"And you bought my signature," Emma smiled, her dark eyes shining with endless love.
"No," Vincent corrected softly, dipping his head to press his forehead against hers. "I bought a contract. But you gave me a life. You gave me a family. You gave me everything I never dared to dream I could have."
Farther down the lawn, little Mateo caught his puppy and held it up triumphantly, turning toward the terrace and waving his small hand with a huge, toothy grin.
"Daddy! Mommy! Look! I caught him!" Mateo cheered loudly.
Vincent smiled—a bright, genuine, magnificent smile that reached his grey eyes, illuminating his face with pure happiness.
He reached out, taking Emma’s hand into his, locking their fingers together—uncovered, warm, and bound by a promise that no lie could ever break.

"Come on, my love," Vincent whispered, kissing her lips softly under the golden autumn sun. "Let's go play with our son."
They walked down the stone steps together into the bright, sunlit garden—a family built on truth, protected by love, and forever whole.
