Chapter 9 - The Birth of Mateo

Two months later.
July 14th, 3:15 AM.
The private delivery wing of Mercy Harbor Medical Center was locked down under elite private security.
Inside Delivery Room 4, the air was tense, filled with the rhythmic beeping of fetal heart monitors and the urgent instructions of Dr. Sarah Chen.
"One more big push, Emma!" Sarah instructed from the end of the bed. "His head is fully crowned! You're almost there!"
Emma lay on the bed, her face flushed with sweat, her teeth gritted as pain washed over her body in massive waves.
Beside her, holding her hand with an iron grip, was Vincent.
He was wearing blue surgical scrubs over his trousers, his shirt soaked with sweat, his face pale with a frantic, terrified anxiety he had never felt in any firefight or syndicate war.
"You can do this, my love," Vincent whispered in her ear, his bare hand brushing wet strands of hair from her forehead, his voice trembling. "I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere."
"Vincent... it hurts!" Emma gasped out, tears spilling down her cheeks.
"I know, my heart, I know," Vincent murmured, kissing her knuckles repeatedly. "Give me your pain. Just push one more time for our son."
Emma squeezed his hand with every ounce of strength remaining in her body, leaning forward, letting out a primal, powerful cry that echoed through the room.
A second later, a loud, clear, miraculous sound pierced the quiet night.
WAAAAAH! WAAAAAH! WAAAAAH!
The sharp, healthy cry of a newborn baby filled the room.
Emma collapsed back against the pillows, panting heavily, tears of overwhelming relief falling from her eyes.
"We have a healthy baby boy!" Sarah announced joyfully, holding up the squirming, dark-haired infant wrapped in a warm white towel. "Time of birth: 3:18 AM. Weight: seven pounds, eight ounces!"
Sarah cleaned the baby quickly and brought him over, placing the tiny bundle directly onto Emma’s chest.
Emma cradled her son, weeping softly as she kissed his small, warm forehead. The baby had a tuft of thick dark hair and tiny, perfect fingers that immediately reached out, gripping Emma’s gown.
Vincent stood over the bed, completely frozen.
He stared down at the tiny human resting on his wife's chest.
For twelve years, he had believed he was a dead end. A broken vessel. A man whose name would fade into history as a violent footnote in Chicago’s dark underbelly.
Slowly, with trembling fingers, Vincent reached down.
His large, calloused thumb gently touched the baby’s tiny hand.
The newborn instinctively let go of the gown and wrapped his tiny, fragile fingers tightly around his father’s thumb.
Vincent let out a ragged, shaking breath. Tears—hot, unbidden, and pure—spilled down his scarred cheeks as he dropped to his knees beside the hospital bed, pressing his face against Emma’s hand and the baby’s blanket.
"He's beautiful, Vincent," Emma whispered through her tears, resting her hand on his dark hair. "Look at him."
Vincent lifted his head, his grey eyes shining with a profound, sacred joy.
"What shall we name him?" Emma asked softly.
May you like
Vincent looked down at his son, who slowly opened his eyes—clear, bright, and dark grey, just like his father’s.
"Mateo," Vincent whispered softly, honoring the memory of his fallen brother while giving life to a new dawn. "Mateo Vincent Moretti."
