Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the Past

At 6:15 AM, the iron gates of the Moretti estate swung open silently.
A sleek black Mercedes SUV glided out onto the slick, rain-drenched tarmac of the coastal highway. In the backseat, Emma sat in silence, watching the grey waves of Lake Michigan crash against the concrete breakwaters.
In the front passenger seat sat Frank—a broad-shouldered man in his late fifties with a broken nose, graying hair, and a suppressed sidearm concealed beneath his leather jacket. He was Vincent’s most trusted personal driver, assigned exclusively to Emma since her third day in the house.
"You're up early this morning, Mrs. Moretti," Frank noted, eyeing her in the rearview mirror. "Usually you don't visit your mother until afternoon shifts."
"She had a restless night, according to the night nurse," Emma lied smoothly, leaning her head against the cool window. "I wanted to see her before the morning shift changes."
"Understood," Frank said simply. He didn't ask further questions. That was why Vincent trusted him.
Twenty minutes later, the SUV pulled into the secluded oak-lined drive of Lakeview Haven.
Emma hurried through the glass doors, her damp coat pulled tight around her frame. She nodded to the receptionist, bypassed the main commons, and walked down the warm, quiet carpeted hallway to Room 114—the deluxe corner suite overlooking the manicured rose garden that Vincent’s money had purchased for her mother.
Inside, Sarah Chen was already waiting.
Sarah sat beside Mrs. Carter, who was peacefully sleeping in a high-backed armchair, a soft wool blanket resting over her lap. On the small bedside table sat a black leather medical pouch, two sterile vials, a tourniquet, and a butterfly needle.
"You look like hell," Sarah said gently, standing up and pulling Emma into a brief, tight hug.
"I haven't slept a second," Emma replied, her voice strained. She sat down in the wooden chair beside the bed and rolled up her cardigan sleeve without being asked. "Just do it quickly."
Sarah didn't waste time. With practiced, expert hands, she wrapped the blue latex band around Emma’s upper arm, sanitized the inner elbow, and slid the thin needle into the vein. Dark red blood flowed instantly into the first vacuum tube. Then the second.
"How long?" Emma asked, watching her own blood fill the glass.
"I’ll take these directly to my private bench at Mercy Harbor," Sarah whispered, capping the vials and labelling them with a randomized numerical code instead of Emma’s name. "I’ll run the automated immunoassay myself. You’ll have the definitive results by noon."
"Thank you, Sarah. Truly."
"Emma..." Sarah hesitated, placing a warm hand on Emma’s knee. "If it’s positive... what are you going to do? Vincent Moretti is not an ordinary man. You signed a contract that explicitly stated there would be no heirs. If he thinks you breached the contract—"
"Vincent isn't a monster," Emma said, though her own voice lacked conviction.
"He's the head of the largest organized crime syndicate in the Midwest, Emma!" Sarah hissed softly. "Three years ago, when the Lucchesi family tried to hijack a Moretti shipment in West Chicago, Vincent personally executed four of their capos in an abandoned meatpacking plant! He isn't a knight in shining armor! He’s a ruthless killer!"
"He bought my shoes," Emma whispered, looking down at her polished leather boots. "He paid for my mother’s care for life. He eats dry toast at 3:00 AM because he doesn't want Mrs. Doyle waking up to cook for him. There is... another side to him, Sarah."
"Pray that side is the one that answers the phone when the test comes back," Sarah said quietly, packing her gear into her pouch. "I’ll text you the code when the file uploads."
Emma stayed with her mother for another hour, stroking the elderly woman’s thin white hair while her mother babbled softly about childhood summers in Maine. At 8:30 AM, Emma walked back out to the parking lot, where Frank was patiently waiting inside the idling Mercedes.
"Back to the estate, ma'am?" Frank asked as she slid into the leather backseat.
"Yes, Frank. Thank you."
The drive back was agonizing. Every minute felt like an hour. Emma stared at her phone, her thumb hovering over the screen every time it vibrated with news alerts or calendar notifications.
When they arrived back at the estate, the courtyard was unusually crowded. Four black armored SUVs were parked in a neat row outside the main portico. Men in dark suits with earpieces stood near the grand fountain, their postures rigid, their eyes scanning the perimeter.
Emma stepped through the heavy oak double doors into the foyer.
Grant Hale was standing near the grand archway leading to the library, holding a thick leather folder. When he saw Emma, his expression tightened.
"Mrs. Moretti," Grant said, bowing his head respectfully. "The boss is in his private study. He requested to see you the moment you returned."
Emma’s heart sank into her stomach. "Is something wrong?"
"There was an incident last night," Grant said neutrally, gesturing toward the stairs. "In West Chicago. A matter concerning the Lucchesi family. The boss has been awake all night."
Emma swallowed hard, her pulse hammering in her ears. "I'll go up."
She climbed the stairs, her feet feeling like blocks of lead. She approached the double mahogany doors of Vincent’s private study—a room she had only entered twice in three months.
She knocked softly.
"Enter," Vincent’s deep voice echoed from within.
Emma pushed the door open.
The study was dark, illuminated only by the gray daylight filtering through the tall arched windows and the faint glow of a green banker's lamp on the massive executive desk. The walls were lined with thousands of leather-bound books, antique maps, and a collection of historical swords.
Vincent sat behind the desk.
He had removed his suit jacket. His white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, revealing the thick, jagged scar tissue running up the right side of his neck—a permanent reminder of the explosion twelve years ago that had claimed his brother's life.
He was holding a single, yellowed sheet of paper.
"Sit down, Emma," Vincent said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
Emma walked across the thick Persian rug and sat in the heavy leather armchair facing his desk. Her hands trembled in her lap.
Vincent set the yellowed paper down between them.
Emma looked down.
It was an official hospital record from Northwestern Memorial Hospital, dated twelve years ago. At the top was Vincent’s name. At the bottom were the signatures of four senior urologists and trauma surgeons.
Highlighted in yellow marker was a single paragraph:
Severe bilateral pelvic trauma secondary to blast impact. Total arterial occlusion and tissue necrosis. Patient rendered permanently and irreversibly sterile.
Vincent leaned forward, resting his forearms on the desk, his dark eyes locked onto hers with a cold, terrifying intensity that made the air freeze in her lungs.
"This document has governed my life for twelve years," Vincent said softly. "It dictated how I structured my empire. It dictated why my rivals allowed me to take power without immediate total war—because they believed the Moretti bloodline ended with me."
He paused, his chest rising and falling slowly.
"Ten minutes ago," Vincent continued, "Grant intercepted an encrypted data packet sent from the pathology lab at Mercy Harbor Medical Center to a secure IP address."
Emma felt the world tilt on its axis. Her breath stopped completely.
Vincent picked up a second piece of paper—a fresh printout—and slid it across the desk, resting it directly over the twelve-year-old medical report.
Emma looked down through a haze of terror.
It was the laboratory result from Sarah Chen.
Patient ID: #88492-C
Test: Serum Quantitative HCG
Result: 14,250 mIU/mL
Status: POSITIVE — Gestational Age: ~6 Weeks.

Vincent leaned back in his chair, his gloved hands resting flat on the mahogany desk, his voice dropping into a register that was lower, darker, and more dangerous than anything Emma had ever heard in her life.
"Now, Emma," Vincent whispered, his dark eyes burning into her very soul. "Explain to me how my contract wife is pregnant."
