Chapter 7 - The Father Returns

The steel fire extinguisher slipped from Emma’s hands, hitting the concrete floor with a heavy CLANG.
"Vincent..." she sobbed out.
Vincent dropped his rifle onto the floor.
He took two unsteady steps forward, collapsing onto his knees right in front of her, his large frame shaking with pure exhaustion.
Emma threw herself onto the floor beside him, wrapping her arms tightly around his broad neck, burying her face into his blood-stained shoulder, weeping uncontrollably.
"You're alive... you're alive," she cried over and over, kissing his soot-covered neck, his cheek, his hairline.
Vincent’s arms wrapped around her waist with crushing strength, pulling her so close against his chest that she could feel the thunderous, desperate beat of his heart through his torn clothing.
"I told you..." Vincent rasped out, his voice raw, gravelly, and choked with emotion. "I told you I would protect my family."
"Grant said... Grant said your signal went dark in Detroit," Emma sobbed, pulling back slightly to examine his face, her hands frantically checking his body for life-threatening wounds.
"Lucchesi tried to ambush me inside the Commission hall," Vincent explained softly, his dark eyes looking at her with an intensity that burned through the shadows of the room. "He brought thirty men. He thought he had me cornered."
A faint, lethal smile touched the corner of Vincent’s mouth.
"He forgot that I spent twelve years building an army that answers only to me," Vincent continued. "My tactical teams breached the hall from the roof. Lucchesi is dead, Emma. His entire inner circle was eliminated in Detroit before noon."
Emma gasped, her hand covering her mouth. "And the estate here?"
"Grant held the perimeter line until my reinforcements arrived from Chicago," Vincent said, reaching up with his bare hand—his glove long since lost in battle—to gently cup her face. "Mrs. Doyle is safe in the upper medical suite. Grant is wounded in the shoulder, but he will live."
He looked down at her lap, his bare, warm hand slowly sliding down from her waist to rest flat against her stomach.
His large hand covered her entire lower abdomen.
Vincent froze.
The ruthless mafia don, the man who had just survived two bloody battles in twelve hours, looked down at his own hand resting over her womb with a profound, terrifying awe that made his eyes fill with unshed tears.
"Is... is the child safe?" Vincent whispered, his voice trembling so violently he could barely articulate the words.
"The baby is safe, Vincent," Emma whispered back, covering his hand with her own, guiding his fingers to press slightly against her core. "Our child is perfectly safe."
Vincent let out a long, shuddering sob. He dropped his head down, resting his forehead directly against her lap, his body weeping silently in the dark vault as he held his wife and his unborn child in his arms.
"I found out about Bruno," Emma whispered softly, stroking his dark hair. "Grant told me about the fake medical report twelve years ago. Your uncle lied to you, Vincent. You were never broken."
Vincent didn't raise his head, but his grip on her waist tightened.
"I know," Vincent murmured into her lap. "Grant found Bruno’s private safe in the estate study during the fire. The original medical records were inside. I was never sterile, Emma... I was just betrayed by the people I trusted."

He slowly lifted his head, looking up into her dark, beautiful eyes.
"Until I met you," Vincent whispered, his heart laid completely bare. "You are the only person in twelve years who told me the truth."
